First off, I'm quoting a comment from Jim (JTecalo) here to avoid a really outrageous Topic hi-jack.
"Steve Cali is not far behind you guys.
I'm surprised it's still legal to even talk about firearms in this state."
#1) While I had the dog at the Veterinarian today, he commented on my T-shirt (JoJo's Guns, my local gunsmith), and asked where and what I shoot?
As our discussion progressed he was shocked to discover that he must register the 13 round magazines for his H&K with the state, complete to thumbprint and Notary seal, and that anytime he is anyplace but his home or a firing range he must download to 10 rounds. In addition, any magazine in transport, unless personally carried with a Carry Permit must be unloaded, magazines in transit, unless carried on the person, must be unloaded. He's just a nice guy who had no clue that on Jan 1, 2014 he could become a Class D Felon in CT.
#2) As is was driving in a suburban/rural area about 10 AM, on a moderately busy state highway I saw a black bear running through a couple of suburban yards, toward and then away from the road. I'm no expert, it looked to stand close to 4' at the shoulder as it was cruising thru the swing sets, pools, garages, ...
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

I'm always amazed at the lack of civic minded folks. Yesterday, there was vote in our Parish regarding a millage, on property tax, to fund roads and bridges. We went a bit late in the day, and granted- I live in a very small town (1600), only 22 had showed up to vote. People who don't care, won't care- until they want to gripe about something. Just looked- 25% voter turn out.
On a similar note, we've had a few spotting of Black Bear in this part of our state, as well. Bear haven't had a population around here since the 40's. I figure they're coming down from Arkansas.

Black bear is becoming very common here. A year ago there was one in the tree in our daughters front yard that made it to newspapers and TV. It was gone by the time she got home, but the heighbors told her all about it.
A couple of years ago it was certain that we had coyote in the neighborhood, we often heard the "death cry" of a cat/rabbit/???. We have two streets either end of our very short block that dead end into a steep ravine with a creek, lots of trees and brush.
Whenever I took the dog out for her last outside trip of the night, my S&W M-59 went along.

Coyotes protected? Maybe that's why I've seen a few sauntering down the side of roads this year.
As for the black bears they have always been around. There was a girl visiting her grandparents in Cadillac recently who got mauled.
The "woods" she was jogging in was really a two track behind the last street in a subdivision.
Plucky kid, her story reads and ends well.

Some old fart a mile away shoots a bear in his yard, it wanders away and the DNR finish him, (male), off. Of course it's not the bear who attacked the girl. They were able to pull bear DNA from the girls wounds and identify the attacking bear as female.
Before the State and the DEQ outlawed open municipal garbage dump sites you could bear watch at the area dumps.

Press on regardless.

Coyotes endangered, really??
Here in PA there is no closed season on coyotes and no bag limit. With all the rules and regs i am reading from you guys, I am more and more glad that I was born and raised here in PA.

Mike,
Next time you see that cop, share this from the IL Dept. of Natural Resources:
"The trapping season is restricted to the fall and winter months, while the hunting season is open year-round. A liberal hunting season allows landowners to remove problem animals without having to obtain a special permit."

Wow,snake-eye that's pretty brazen for a coyote. Around Ocala horse farms the weapon of choice is an AR in .223 at 600 yds. Open season all the time.
Now bear , thats different. I noticed bear crossing signs the other day in the national forest. Don't know why they want them to cross there. There were no crosswalks. Seriously, a 600 lb black bear was recently killed by a car in Fl. They grow big on garbage.

This is Texas (NE) and bears aren't exactly a problem. Coyotes and hogs are another matter entirely. Interestingly, here in the Dallas/Fort worth area Bobcats are becoming a pretty common sight. Not really a problem unless you are dumb enough to let your cats and small dogs wander or you fail to watch small children.

Hey Ron:
Thanks for that. Now I know that I won't lose my gun or go to jail if a family member is threatened.
I think they just say that stuff to discourage use of firearms regardless of legality. Let's be PC, OK?

I too, have heard local leo's tell folks some thing gun related that I new for a fact was wrong. In my line of work though; if I cause them any trouble/embarrassment, all they have to do is make one phone call and there goes my license. One, I simply told them to research it themselves or consult an attorney.
Here in Upstate SC it's coyotes and feral hogs. Seems those critters are on the increase everywhere.
