Just got back from a rare trip to the city where I found this.
It has a few nicks and scratches but should be a good shooter.
I did notice the first few grip screw threads in the tang are a bit rough. I'll need to figure out how to chase these threads without cross threading.
Of course I couldn't pass it up. It's a good partner to last month's W12.
Also, my search for a "shooter 44" hasn't been successful. I did find this one but it's way too nice to fit the "carry in the woods everyday" category. Couldn't pass it up either.
(Does anyone have a 4" ported barrel tube FS)
Boy BobAk, mighty nice dans and all three W12 barrels to boot. Mighty fine case of DWAS too. Buying two dans at once can put DWAS in remission but does not cure it. I just bought a shooter for 200 $ , a HS mark ii. First purchase since I bought two in one day. FYI beaters don't count.

Well those ought to keep you busy for a while. You've had a good couple of months! Enjoy.
Hopefully in the spring I'll be searching for a 714 for carry.

No problem it's an 8-32 standard american thread. If you don't already have a tap, any respectable hardware store will have one for a few bucks. Nice score, I have been itchin for a 4 inch 44 but they are few and far between, or out of my rent district.

The 44 came with the unported barrel. I ordered a comp from Eric a few weeks ago knowing that sooner or later I would have a use for it.
I realize using the ported barrel is dirtier but I thought I've give it a try. As a field carry (bear) gun I'd like to stick with the 4inch barrel and I'd like to see if the ported barrel has any effect at all with these heavy Buffalo Bore Bear loads.
lbruce,
I have the tap. My concern is while repairing the bottom two threads how am I sure that the tap will be aligned with the rest of the good threads.
My thought was to approach it from the inside starting with the 1/4'' or more of good thread to ensure that the threads I'm cleaning are aligned.
Does this make any sense?

It makes sense but I don't believe it will be possible without removing the insert ( DW calls it the "main spring seat") . Some inserts are welded, some are piened, If the insert comes out ( sometimes they do) locktite will fix that issue but I believe a careful hand should be able to clean it up from the bottom, but I am not looking at it so only you can decide. Worse case scenario $8.95 from DW will get you a new main spring seat. Good luck and keep us informed.

Since the problem was on the first two threads and they weren't in terrible shape I did this.
I pulled the main spring which left a clear shot at the grip threads from above. I used an 1 1/2 " 8/32 screw from the hardware store $.70. As you know the heads on these are smaller (9/64" allen wrench instead of 5/32") to chase the threads from the inside. With plenty of cutting oil and moving slowing I was able to easily thread the screw in cleanly from above and straighten out those last two threads.
I think these threads tend to get messed up when putting on rubber grips. I've found that the Pachs and Hogues have tight screw channels which cock the screw to one side or the other when starting out. I've taken to using the hardware store screws with smaller heads. This gives some room to engage the threads without forcing them. I've also modified some nylon washers to use as shims to get the grip screw length just right.
Anyway, the threads are clean now and work great.

Great solution to your problem. I have successfully used a drill to open up the hole in the Hogue grips for the head of the grip screw - no more fighting to get the screw in or out.

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.
