Thank you so much for your interest and answers to my first post. Upon further inspection I found another sales receipt in the case dated 7-24-1979 from The Silhuoette in Idaho Falls, Idaho. This tells me two things. This gun was manufactured before 1980 and my father was not the first owner. Besides the 10" barrel there are 8" and 6" barrels and another grip. I believe these barrels were bought separately, as they do not have the IHMSA markings on them. I will send pictures as soon as I can. Which forum should I send them to? RWC

Maybe this helps out? IHMSA numbered guns from Dan Wesson were sold to IHMSA Members that were given the opportunity to buy an IHMSA Member Serial Numbered gun. This was a custom Serial Number gun that was pre ordered and was transferred to the IHMSA Member that had that membership number. This was a very limited offering for IHMSA Members, and they could only order a Serial Number that was their IHMSA Member number, but they could order the same IHMSA Member number on different calibers/models
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

I have seen an A and a B after the member number on IHMSA guns where the member ordered two field pistol packs.
Thanks, I forgot to mention that, because I'm OLD, and actually forgot about this extra wrinkle in the IHMSA numbering policy

ok, I'll bite.. when I bought mine I got one with a "B", I always assumed it was a designator for a blued version, as at that time I never saw a stainless version, just curious also wha the "A' Versions were? (maybe ones with custom member numbers????)
My IHMSA B numbered is below the first 100 produced, (pic in my intro posting) and I actually joined IHMSA and ordered the pistol whithin days of them becoming available,( we didn't do the internet thing back then, and relied on phone calls... thanks Elgin and John Taffin).. I have to believe there were more IHMSA members in that org, before I ordered my pistol.

If the A or B was at the end of the S/N, it means that it was one of the two guns of the same model that the IHMSA Member purchased serial numbered with his IHMSA Member number. Adding a trailing A/B made the S/N unique and labelled the guns of a matched pair.
Dan Wesson was fairly active with custom serial numbers in the late 70's-early 80's, and they will do custom serial numbers now on 1911's

ahhh, I see now.
thanks Steve,
I didn't request special numbering at time of purchase, and my IHMSA number was much different than the number on my pistol at the time. The A/B thing you are speaking of is a suffix at the end of the s/n.
that makes sense.

At various times, DW did use B (blue) and S (stainless) in serial numbers, it seems to have followed changes in ownership/corporate entity where serial number "style" changed.

understood, and actually the IHMSA I still own (sold one), has the B in the prefix number "445B", of course this isn't a .357 version, but I guess the numbering scheme still would apply.
