I was once told by a very smart gun nut that every gun has a value and it is based on its purpose. His argument was that if his practice gun of choice was a rim fire he would spend as much if not more on this gun because it would get used the most over possibly a magnum which only was shot a few times a year. I think he was on to something. Some of my highest value guns are what I always shoot, not whether it is a large center fire. Any thoughts out there?

I think you just described the difference between a collector and an enthusiast. Neither one being more right than the other just different directions.
I agree - and I am an enthusiast through and through. I shoot every gun I own and I have only ever sold one rifle - a Marlin lever gun that I just didn't like to shoot and a guy I know really wanted it.
I can understand how some people like to collect but it has just never been my thing. I smoked pipes for years and I have several high-end pipes that people thought I was crazy for smoking. I would always ask them why? They were made with one purpose - to smoke. I apply the same logic to my guns and every object - use them for what they were intended.

I shoot some I smoke some (including some Tim West pipes).... I started as a Hunter, moved through a competitive shooting phase, and am now a collector and recreational shooter (still hunting). I spend what I can on what I want and although I do have a sense of 'value' for some firearms, I have been known to overpay for what I want (worth).
Technically, the glass is always full; half liquid, half air....

And there are the Commemorative guns that certainly can be shot but then lose $$$ value.
I guess the point is that the VALUE can be measured in more than just $$$
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

IMHO, some guns of yore have transcended purpose and have become industrial art. Similar to Damascus and Japanese swords, and though the secret of their manufacture has not yet been lost, they will never be made again with such attention to detail and precision. They can be used for the purpose they made for but they are far more valuable than a tool.

This discussion reminds me of the day that this was purchased
Serial #00001 .445 SuperMag
NIB, unfired, I was the second "owner", the first owner was a collector who was making room for new purchases. Our son, just home from a Persian Gulf deployment HAD to have it, and bought it on the spot. I don't recall the purchase price. It got better when my good friend Jody sent out 50 .445SM cases, my son set up his reloading equipment on a Black&Decker Workmate in the living room, next day we had the best Range Day of my life.
Price? I could probably look it up.
Value? Some things have value beyond dollars

The way I look at it, is that they only lose value when you decide to sell them. But then, if you never shoot them, you don't get as much enjoyment out of them.

Dean, if they were meant to hang on the wall, they would have had a picture hook instead of a cylinder latch.

I want to thank all of you who responded to this topic I started. You all reminded me of a very good friend that was with me the day I purchased my first Dan Wesson. We use to have talks like this all the time. Use to because he passed away from cancer. We both owned Dan Wessons and shot, reloaded, cast bullets, and hunted together for years. Thanks again guys
