I'm gonna steer clear of that fat joke business...

But I will say that if she likes it, why not buy her one? After all, if she gets something she likes in the firearm department, it may grease the wheels for you in theDWASdepartment!Wink

WHAT!...?

My father always wanted a Jag XJ6.  He was too tall and thus didn't fit well in one.  But, such practicality of choice never quelled his desire.  I asked him "why" once, and this was his answer.

I have a slight change of thought, I'll stick with hand guns I have 12 rugers, old models 22 to 44 they will always have a home in the (preble) family. I'm up to 10 DW's and still counting. Sold my last S$W to buy my last DW. My question is that I'm looking to buy 45lc. single action for a try at mounted cowboy shooting. What would be the concensus here on colts, us firearms or ruger vaquero? Have any of you had bad experience with these. I want case hardened frame with blueing and 3 1/2" to 4 5/8" barrel for cross draw.occasion

Uhhh, yes. My wife was into the scrapbooking scene in the early 90's, then out, before it went 'viral' (internet).rofl She spent many hundreds of dollars on that quest, but that was ok with me...I was easily out-spending here on old musclecar parts & she knew it. I didn't mind, she was happy & that helped both of us.

My cousin is a LEO so I think he can get me a little better deal on Glocks... maybe before spring I'll break down and do it.  Cry

Pops, I love my Ruger.  It is blued with the case hardened frame.  If I'm not mistaken though the case hardened look is achived with chemicals not a true case harden process.  But it looks great and feels good.

I generally never say "never" but...

No Hillary Hole S&W. Ever...

Ruger Super Redhawk. It looks like it was designed & assembled by Soviet era peasants after a bad vodka bender...

Any semi auto with X, EXTREME  (or any "X"treme derivative), TACTICAL, OPERATOR or any other tacky pretentious buzzwords emblazoned on the slide. Puh-leeeze...

A handgun with a scope. I own a rifle... 😉

X frame S&W. Compensate much? 😀 Like I said. I own a rifle... And it has the dreaded "X." :barf:

I'll play.

A Glock.  Not because it's plastic.  (I own a Colt .22 Target that's mostly plastic), but because it has a safety in the trigger.  I don't trust myself with it.

Any other firearm that has a safety in the trigger.

Anything that is difficult to find ammo for, eg Nagant Revolver.

A rifle chambered in 5mm.  I'm still mad at Remington for abandoning it's customers.

Any of the AR .22 cal knock-offs.  If I want an AR that shoots .22LR, I'll buy a lower, and an upper, for not much more money.

My turn..

Any tupperwear "block" ...I know they can be dropped from helicopters and filled with dirt..yada yada.  A metal handgun has enough weight to it for it to actually get someone's attention when you slap them with it. (doesn't sound practical, but ya can't always just shoot 'em either) besides their "blockyness" profiles real bad under yer shirt.

Is there a reason the glocks, blocks, are so popular in uniform? is it the ease of training due to the lack of any extra controls and safeties? Basically a non-shooter's gun? Don't get sore at me LEO! This is what I have gleaned from training manuals about them.

those norinco autos

any S&W autos

jennings

I absolutely love Remington but not any with a plastic reciever or that liberalist "j" lock on the bolt.

or anything that has liberal features, like a big fat double stack mag that holds like 8 rounds.

I like my guns to fire real ammo, and be of metal,

I also kinda believe in the saying "be careful of the man with one gun, he probably knows how to use it!"

I also don't see the thrill of full auto, even when I was equipped with an MP-5. Burst fire was spot on...full auto was just a waste...even if every round hit the target.  And with the M16 and M-4 i always used semi instead of burst.

I deviate from the Army's definition of suppressive fire.  Instead of dumping a mag over a wall at...? I aim and actually shoot the bad guy, therefore making him suppressed.  ha ha.

Even lately at a gun show I talked my friend out of buying a $90 moisin nagant.  I told him there is a reason its only 90 bucks.

I did buy a cheap Mauser though years back. But Mauser and Moisin shouldn't even be in the same sentence.

I also have an AK and AR.  I like the AR, but really really trust the AK.

howdy 6point8,

Hijack alert.  Guess if you've asked it, I can answer.  I'll try to be brief but, likely won't achieve it.  Some folks may actually take interest in how Glock gained favor in LE circles.

There's usually an event that prompts a hard look at things.  The introduction of high capacity auto-loaders into the LE community is no exception.  The 1986 FBI Miami gun battle drove this look at things.

Recall in 1986, most LE agencies were using revolvers, 1911s or a combination.  The FBI determined that it was grossly out gunned in Miami.  Low round count, and reloads were horribly slow.  The push was on across the country to re-arm LE.

S&W was really the only "solid" auto-loader on the market outside of the 1911s… and then there was the new kid, Glock.  The 1911 platform was considered but, ammo capacity was it's down fall; being only one to three above the revolver.

Glock flat stomped during the evaluations for these reasons:

Easy transition from the revolver to the Glock.  Glock basically operated the same, unholster and fire.  The triggers were similar.  The only serious training curve was malfunction clearance.

Qualilfy scores improved.

High round count in the weapon and on the belt.  Most 1911s were 8+1.  The Glock was 17+1!  Yes, this was a trade-off of .45 for 9mm but, such was the move of the day and considered an acceptable concession.

The Glock 17 was the same or smaller than most 1911s being carried.

Reload time was drastically cut compared to revolvers.

Light weight… a big plus when a sidearm has to be carried all day.

An agency could buy two to three Glocks for every one of the competition (a huge motivator for the pencil jockeys).

Ease of maintenance and availability of standard parts… plug and play parts.  Manufacturing consistency across the platform.  Glock would train department armors and/or send armors on site.  Big benefit in that day.

Glock was promising a "detective" model (the model 19)… a smaller pistol that would accept the "duty" magazines.  Read interchangability on the battle ground.  Magazine interchangability was a novel concept in 1986.  Some 1911s could depending upon model and maker.

Glock was tested, and proven,  arguably the sturdiest combat pistol made… and even with part failures, will still stay in the fight.  No other sidearm of its time could be subjected to the same abuse and still function.  Today, this field is still very narrow.

The Feds were giving Glock serious consideration; eventually going with Glock after trying some other makers.

Glock was a no-brainer in most eyes… less the diehard revolver and 1911 guys.

A couple of aside notes: the Glock prints no worse than any other arm.  You don't want to be b**ch slapped with a glock either.  The slide will chunk your noggin' but good.  Many, too many IMO, cops are not gun enthusiasts or shooters… go to a qualify to hide and watch.  I haven't been to one in many years that i didn't cringe or even duck! at least once.

The North Hollywood battle in 1997 pushed the patrol rifle into police cruisers across the nation.  The AR had found its "event."  The trusted ole 870 took a serious back seat.  Some agencies no longer equip with the shotgun… sad.

Thanks Truckie, didn't mean to squash any toes…This is an opinion based question. I wouldn't buy a Glock.

I am familiar with the procurement situation of glock in LE. And said gunbattles, as we know they have been studied to help prevent such from happening again.  In 1986 those brave officers were outgunned by bad guys who had semi rifles, mini 14.  Outgunned no matter what handgun they had.

the glocks durability and ease of use is legendary. But then again so is a revolver's.  I have defended glocks when people were safety bashing…I stated that a double action revolver has no "safety" either. It won't go boom unless trigger pulled.

As far as round count….They need to make their rounds count?  It's what I was taught and did so in my classes. Too many times we see instances where LEO dump all 17 rounds on someone….double tap? ok drug bunny juiced…5 maybe? (I'm not questioning their judgement to fire…only how many times?) I believe a better skill set and situational awareness could have saved officer's and suspects lives. No matter what type of sidearm they carried.  All too often our American bureaucracy has thrown money and supplies at a situation that could be solved with training.  I won't even start with the piss poor military training as of late.

Tried a friend's glock 19, it has a squareish width much larger than a 45. and printed wayy more than my commander.

I**qi Army loves the Glock 17?  (the big 9mm) I have seen them beat someone with full on haymaker swings with that glock and the guy still was able to resist. I admit I don't want to be hit with anything…but a full metal gun may render someone "out" sooner?

I see they offer metal frames now for glocks…and have repaired most of the broken rails on the .40s.  couple a hundred thousand of them, LE only.

S&W makes nice wheel guns, I have a couple, but their autos are ugly…opinion.

Marines are going back to the 1911 by the way. SEALs use, have used, Sig. Seen Army Group guys with private purchase H&K and 1911s.

Yea I'm a diehard wheelgun and 1911 guy.

Others here have also stated their opinion on not liking the glock…

Like all firearms they are tools. A glock suits a valid need, capacity to compensate for shooter accuracy, ease of use to compensate for muscle memory training, durability to compensate for lack of maintenance. I'm not saying everyone with a glock can't shoot or maintain a weapon, just how it fills a niche.

I don't like seatbelts, but if everybody drove perfectly and vehicles never broke, we wouldn't need seatbelts. Seatbelts are great and they are there to compensate for skill and mechanical defects? still don't like 'em.

Therefore as the title of the thread says "what gun would you never buy".  Glock is the best pistol ever.....as tested by other people, with budget in mind.  I won't buy a glock, or a Beretta 92 which after testing was found to be the "best". I will forever remmember the barrel link failures witnessed whilst training for match shoots in the Corps.  (soon I'll be offered a glock for pennies and I'll have to "buy" it and eat my words?) ha ha

Too bad about the shotguns, the less-than-lethal and breaching loads are very helpful at times. Now police have tasers...

Hijack over, sorry guys….

Thank you Truckie for your service and dedication.

6point8,

Loved your reply!  I concur with all you've said.  No toes squashed here.  And no Sir, thank you for your service.  What I do pales in comparison.

As with most things, Glock's timing was right when LE was in search of.

True in Miami, rifles were fighting handguns and a shotgun or two.  The general opinion of the FBI was that if enough rounds could have been placed downrange, the rifles couldn't have been effectively deployed.

Miami is also the event that made the Feds et al look hard at training.  Another tidbit, Agents were instructed to place spent brass in a pocket.  Range officers didn't want brass cluttering up the range.  Everyone assumed that if in a fight, Agents would "surely" dump brass on the ground during reload... not the way it happened.  One does fight the way he/she trains, so it seems.

Jody, sorry for the hijack.  Just putting a tad of history on the board.  I was low level  involved in the evaluation of sidearms during '87.  Thanks for being lenient.

Peace, I respect LEO, for they do what I cannot. Like hancuff a man who has beaten a woman or gangstas doin their gangsta crap. Many of my collegues have gone law enforcement, I understand I will land in trouble. I would make a great Russian policeman though.

How about them guns we would never buy...unless for real cheap...or for the woman 'cause she wants it...or the one for the toolbox that is "just in case"?  ha ha
