Ah yes, glass; here's a can of worms... Generally- you get what you pay for. For an average hunter/ shooter grade scope I think the Nikon Monarch and Bushnell Elite lines are pretty good. Light gathering and clarity are very good and the price doesn't break the bank. However, I lean towards Leupold on most of my single shot handguns as I like their EER scopes the best. That being said- I have a few NcStars too; I know....Here's one of my regular stops on the interweb:
I used to own all Leupold scopes.... Now 90% of my scopes are Nikon Monarch UCC or original Bushnell Elites in the 3200 or 4200 series. The elites are the best scope you can buy for the money in my opinion. Don't get me wrong Leupold makes a perfect product-- but when you toss the cash factor in I can't buy a lot of Leupolds. I also own a few Vortex scopes since I know the owner--He makes good stuff. Weaver Grand slams are in my safe also.
I just looked at my scope database -- I own 54 scopes

I agree that the 06 is arguably the most versatile of the rifle cartridges I just like to offer alternatives. I do base my recommendations on caliber on the thought "can you find it in Podunk Junction, name your favorite state. 7-08 and other cartridges are viable and work but what if you go on a hunt and (heaven forbid) forget your ammo? 308 and 30-06 are common everywhere.
As far as the glass is concerned what comes on a Savage package rifle is NOT the best but can get you started and if you're not happy it can be replaced.

Okay. thanks for the pic.
On they way back home from work I stopped at Jay's to see if I get lucky and catch some 22's on the shelf. While there I checked to see if they had a Savage 30.06. Yes they did the Axis model and it had the trigger like your picture, Ron (right?) plus the scope. Price...$510
Then stopped at the little gun shop and theirs did not.
Endeavor to persevere,
Press on regardless.

Here's your Savage axis 30-06 with scope for $299 shipped. Hopefully it will be in stock long enough for you to see it and make a decision.

Bummer, no AccuTrigger. For me that's the difference between a great Savage 30-06 and a nice everyday 30-6. AccuStock is really sweet too.

This is my first post, and it is a good topic for me. My go to everyday rifle is a Savage 110 in 30-06. It has worn 3 stocks, and 4 scope's it is pre accutrigger which is fine with me. I have owned it for over 25 years and it is still an MOA rifle, even with the sporter weight barrel. It has also never fired a factory loaded round. Not a lot of things I would feel under gunned going after.
