Last time I bought ammo, I went into Walmart, bought a ton of stuff for all of the calibers I regularly shoot and went home.
Last night I went to 5 Walmarts and nobody had anything in stock. Finally one guy told me that they get in a few boxes every day at 0700 and they're gone by 0730. So I went in this morning at 0700 intending to stock up and they only had ammo in 4 calibers: 9mm, .38Spcl, .357Mag, and .45ACP.
Unfortunately all of it was federal, not my personal favorite.
Then, to top it off, he said I can only buy 3 boxes per day. HUH!!!
So I decided to check Midway USA. They have almost nothing in stock (except cowboy loads) and won't let you backorder anything.
Have Remington and Winchester stopped making ammo?
UGH!!!

Same thing happens here in CT. I called Walmart at 0700 one Sunday morning based on a tip from a friend and the manager said they didn't think they put the ammo out yet as the department employee doesn't come in till 0800. So I show up at about 0750 and was told it was all gone. A husband and wife couple each bought 3 boxes and there was no more left.
While Midway won't let you backorder, I've had good luck signing up for their "Notify Me" option which emails you when your item is back in stock. Sometimes it takes a few weeks to come in, but if you get right on the computer when the notification comes in, you'll be able to get the item. Problem is that it's usually limited to 1 or 2 boxes and the hazmat fee and shipping adds $15+per order. Good luck.

Have you guys been hiding under a rock somewhere? There has been an ammo shortage for almost a year. Someone convinced the shooting world that all guns and ammo were going to be outlawed and there has been massive hoarding since last November. The supply line dried up and the manufacturers can't refill it 'cause the hoarders are still at work. The situation is getting better so have patience.
You really need to come around here more often. You might be surprised what you can find out.

Well, PB, thanks for the admonition.

Have to say that a year on the "hoarding" explanation is starting to sound thin. No doubt there are hoarders and plenty more like me who have depleted their stockpile over the last 10 months and actually NEED that one box of whatever we stumble on but can that be all? It's not like the retailers get their usual shipment from the distributor and sell out. As mentioned above, even the high volume retailers are only seeing a handfull of boxes at a time, low volume retailers go months without receiving anything. If the factories are running flat out as they say and the retailers aren't getting anything as they say then where is it all going? I'm not the conspiracy theory type but this is just starting to feel WRONG....

Mike, my reply to you was not meant to disbarage you in any way, that's why the smiley face. I meant that as an invitation to be around more. I am sorry that medical problems kept you from being on the forum. I based my remarks on what you posted originally and meant them to be light hearted. I assure you it won't happen again.
Consider me suitably chastised.

There's still a crunch on most popular calibers across the country - some regions still being hit harder than others. I never thought I'd see the day when .22lr wasn't available....it still continues to be OOS across the country. Bricks of "common" plinking ammo have been known to bring $100+.....just insanity!

About the only ammo I buy is .22LR. I load my own for everything else. Powder and primers are still hard to find. I seldom pass up either when ever I see some for sale. My big score today was 2 packs (100) CCI 500 SP primers and 1# of Win 748 powder. This was the day they got in their shipment. When I got there they had only 2 types of CCI primers, maybe 5# of rifle powder, and no .22LR.
The store I bought this from, BiMart, has guys that have been through this stuff before. Every time they get in a few primers and powders they declare the drought over...until next week when there's nothing on the shelves again.
Mea Culpa. And millions like me. New to firearms since the last election, I was always a strong supporter of the second amendment. I felt my rights were going to be infringed and exercized them to acquire all I felt I might need(.308, .223, .45acp. 9mm). Millions like me and long time enthusiasts all buying guns and ammo is huge demand. Not only building an inventory but using thousands of rounds learning to shoot creates astronomical numbers. Then I discovered Dan Wessons and had to have .357 mag., .38 spec., .44 mag., and yes , .22lr.. When I go to the range I see mostly retirees and women practicing with their new ccw at 5 to7 yds.. Many are shooting .22lr. because of recoil issues and expense. Be prepared to buy what and where you can for three more yrs.. OD

Let me see if I can explain this. Until recently I worked in the retail end of the firearms world. When the panic hit last year all distributors were emptied of the stocks of guns and ammo. For handguns this was January of 2012. The production facilities at the manufacturers are such that they can keep up with the normal demand for guns and ammo. They could not and can not keep up with the demand created last fall.I've heard several people ask (in person not on this forum) why the manufacturers don't expand. That would be very expensive and would take a long time. None the less some have but that took time and we're just seeing the benefits of that now.
The manufacturers are producing as fast as they can BUT they can't produce fast enough to fill the supply lines and take care of the retail sales. The reason that you can't find all the ammo you want is because it can't be produced fast enough to restock the distributors and the shelves in any of the stores. For those who shoot a lot and rely on factory ammo it's very frustrating and yes it seems to be a regional thing. It's getting better but not there yet. By the way the same thing happened to reloading components.
As far as hoarding is concerned when this started shooters were buying all the ammo they could buy because they were afraid it was going to be outlawed. That emptied the pipeline and we had and still have a shortage. I'm not accusing anyone of hoarding I'm just stating my opinion from my experience watching it happen. If I broke anyone's rice bowl I apologize.
This is long winded but I felt I needed to explain my original post on this thread a little further.

pecos bill- Thanks for the insight, you have stated pretty clearly what I have read other places and been told in local shops. I don't think the intent of the buying frenzy was to "hoard" but the intent was certainly get what you could, when you could, with the expectation that it would become scarce.
I looked up some definitions of hoarding, most of them seemed to link the accumulation closely with the intent to simply have it, secure it, and not use it, to hide it away from others.
I think most of us expect to use our ammo and reloading components, and I've shared some of my stuff with other shooters, they have freely done so with me.
BTW-I am seeing primers, powder, cases very available in my area, bullets are more available but in limited supply/variety.
.22 lr is almost non-existent
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Things seem to be getting better lately. I have had a backorder with Mid South Shooters
since Feb 2nd 2013. All the powders came in stock about 2 months ago, sp primers came in
stock last week. Still waiting on 2k lr primers and lp primers, hopefully soon.
Have a 250 ct bag of 357 max brass on there too, no telling when that will be filled.
When the last primers show up, I will put the brass on an order by itself and get them to go
ahead and ship the order. Maybe we can get back to our shooting habits soon.

You're correct, Steve. The situation is getting better. I was lucky and decided, last year, to beat the yearly price increase and got enough components to last me but I'm starting to run out now.
As far as rimfire is concerned, I understand that the manufacturers make about 4 mil a DAY and can't get ahead. That's all rimfire cartridges not just 22LR. Think of that! 4 mil a day just to keep up with the normal demand not to fill the pipeline also. Blows my mind.
Be patience gang, it's getting better.
