This is the question my wife sometimes (often?) asks me whenever we are out in public.

FIRST level of self defense is awareness of is who is around me? Unlike most people, I am constantly observing who is around me, and I always make eye contact

SECOND, How do we get out? I'm pretty OK with "run and hide"

THIRD, What defensive tools are available? Virtually always a knife, fairly often a pistol, and anything else that is within ten feet that I can use as a weapon, and there is usually something.

Anyone living in modern American Society that does not have an understanding of these three basics has a new screen name: "Future Victim"

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Amen, I thought it was just my wife. She used to think I was just checking out the other females. Now she knows, since she was finally persuaded to become a shooter and get her CCDW. I also, convinced her to watch some self defense program vids, cause she will not take a class. My kids I have taught to be hunter/trackers and have an awareness of their enviroment,  but mom is like "why" I have you.     Just not all ways true....  What else can I tell her?

My wife has finally stopped asking which side of a table do I want to sit on- it's always the same; facing the entrance and preferable the cash register too ...  Eye contact goes a long way.

Technically, the glass is always full; half liquid, half air....

Yep- 5 years of "watching hands" in combat...  I always seem to notice jewelry before the wife does.

Must be we just do it!   I also watch for large people that I can use as a shield if need be!   We have to be aware in all that we do!

I will say that an interesting side benefit is some pretty nice scenery surprisedwife

Not possible for me to sit in a restaurant and not see the entrance.

I always look at the eyes, anyone who does not like that, too f'ing bad (and I clearly see some who don't like it)

I can't walk through a store without looking down every aisle that we cross first

My right side (I'm right handed) cannot be blocked or encumbered. When we hold hands, she is on my left

I always at least have a knife, and I have a pistol MUCH more often than anyone around me knows.

This forum needs a topic for old members that haven't posted in a long while.  My first time to get on the forum in a long, long time.  The topic "keep looking around" caught my eye.  These days it pays to be aware of everything that moves around you.  I have tried several CC guns and holsters.  Finally I settled on a Ruger LC9s in a kangaroocarry holster.  This fits everything I need for a ccw.

For those of you that remember the "hossman" here I am.  At one time I had 14 DWs but am down to 6 now.  I kept the pork chop ugly nuts and one 15-2 and one .22 LR.  Some of you may remember that my son and I had been separated for 27 years.  We just finished up our 3rd year of getting back together.  He is still a gun nut, even worse than me.

I have very fond memories of the DW forum.  I see some of the names I remember and I wish you all a very Happy New Year.  Shoot 'em straight.

Good to see you back, great that you are re-connected with your son.

NYC boy here...second nature for me.

In Paris one August with the camera bag on shoulder and walking with the bride....spotted him following and saw him in window reflection behind me...wearing long woolen coat...duh. Wife finally caught on and said,"did you know..."

If you're going to drink, don't drive. Don't even putt.
