Most shrouds were ported. Most guns came originally with two barrels one ported and one not. The benefit of the power control feature was minimal and most guys prefer the standard barrels. The ported versions require considerable regular cleaning to prevent a stuck shroud. Just my opinion, stick with what you have.

x3 with lb's recommendation, I purchased a Dan Wesson that somebody didn't keep clean, it took a lot of time and effort to remove shroud.

The 44 shrouds on most of the Monson guns all had ported slots cut into them. The buyer then had the choice to order a ported or standard barrel.

Honestly, the ported barrel design was a little flawed. To keep the lead & soot buildup in the shroud cavity to a minimum, you can only shoot jacketed bullets...and even then, you need to disassemble the barrel after each range trip & give the barrel & shroud a good scrubbing. If you don't, there's a good chance that it will be VERY difficult to get it apart later on.

The compensator design that came along later works much better, with a whole lot less maintenance.
