Thanks for the site. I am trying to identify a Dan Wesson revolver I ran across.

It is .357 mag, 4", newer type shroud, fixed rear sight, barrel nut slots are beveled on one side preventing removal-like a security screw.

Also, will not cock in single action mode. Double action works fine.

What the heck is this thing? Any thoughts appreciated.

Welcome to the forum-- sounds like you have a model 14.

--the nut is probably stripped on one side giving the appearance of a security nut. Good luck getting it off it is really stripped bad.  We have methods to remove the barrel if you wish to pursue.

--The cocking problem is because the grip screw is too long--just pull it out and put washers under the head, buy a shorter screw, or grind it shorter.

Good luck !!!

I don't think the nut has been stripped. It has been machined that way. It is way too even to have been stripped- no burrs, perfectly the same on both sides. Really looks like a security nut.

Thanks for the info. on the screw!!

Unfortunately, it does sound like the nut has been stripped. This is caused by either a worn out tool, or not applying enough pressure on the nut while unscrewing…or both.

The notches in a DW nut are straight cut, no bevel.

At least it sounds like the previous owner stopped while he was ahead. Not all people have that much sense, some keep after it & really make a mess of things.surprised

welcome to the forum.  We like pics so post 'em please, especially of that troublesome barrel nut.  It would certainly be unusual for the barrel nut to have come that way.  If we can see it, somebody here can probably suggest a method of getting it off.  You should probably start soaking it in some penetrating oil.  I'm guessing it has been on so long it is really stuck.

Welcome to the Forum. My guess is that the rounded sides of the barrel nut are on the "loosen" side of the nut. It will look exactly as you describe, the result of repeated efforts to remove a stuck barrel nut. Fixable with the purchase of some readily available hardware, and a large dose of patience.

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

As Shoot said though it would be a 14-2 if it doesn't have the pork chop shroud.

Who knows screwy maybe someone fashioned the nut that way with the

intentions of never taking it back off surprised .

We would need to see some pics to really understand.
