New to the forum and Dan Wesson firearms. I have recently purchased a DW 44 mag with 8 inch barrel. It is stamped Monson and has 66XX serial #. I have not done alot of research on manufacture date but interested in finding out. I bought the pistol because of the rep for accuracy and the few rounds I have sent dwnrange have not discredited this particular firearm. Any info well be appreciated. thanx in advance

welcometo the dwf-sign. Your 44 was probably born on or around 1981. It also should have a short hammer spur. Enjoy the site.

Welcome to the Friendly New Guy (that is what FNG means, yes?)

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

I agree & may I also welcome you board.laugh According to the info currently available, your .44's S/N falls within the "short hammer spur" range.

Personally, I still covet those "shorty 44 DW owners".

Of course, we'd love to see some cool-pics of your newly acquired DW...so by all means, show off that .44 if you have 'em...big-grin

Sure, swap it with a long spur hammer.laugh

An article I read regarding the hammer said that DW changed to the longer style to make it easier to cock the gun when using a scope. I've only seen it mentioned in one article, so I assume that is the only benefit of the longer spur...other than the cool factor.cool

Thanks for sharing yourcool-pics
