I have a DW 44 6 inch with a frozen barrel nut. The barrel nut notches are about stripped out and I am soaking it in Liquid Wrench but nothing is budging. Anyone have any advice on how to get the nut out? I do love these revolvers. I have a 15-2 and this 44 with a couple of barrels each. Do you have any suggestion about how to prevent barrel nut freezing in the future? Any certain type of anti seize fluid? Also, just how tight should you crank down on the barrel nut when installing a barrel? Thank you for any help......

This is one method to remove the barrel, and it works pretty well.

The best thing to do is get a better wrench from EWK (Eric) here on the DWF. Nuts should be snug, not overlly tight.

Yes, get one of Eric's tools for certain. He also has new barrel nuts, usually.
When you are tightening your barrel nut:
- Make sure the feeler gauge is between the barrel and the tightest fitting cylinder position. The cylinder faces of the older guns anr not flat.
- Leave the gauge in postiion and slip the shroud over the barrel.
- Spin the barrel nut on with very little pressure until it stops. Use 1 finger to spin the barrel wrench.
- Finally give a quick firm twist to the barrel wrench to lock everything in position. I then give it one more firm twist. Don't try to torque it on; it may never come off.
Good luck.

Waaay back, when I first got my 15-2 I overtightened, and then rounded the slots on the barrel nut trying to remove it. It went back to the factory for repair, this was one of the DW's with that really crappy two piece wrench and hex-head fitting, easily the weakest part of the DW design.
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Well with a little superhuman strength and Erics wrench, I finally got the barrel nut off. Turns out the the barrel is a ported barrel but the shroud does not appear to be ported(compensated). There are two oblong holes in the shroud on either side of the vent rib but they do not line up with the ports in the barrel. Is this just a mismatch? Thanks again....

The ports will not line up shroud to barrel. The DW system allows the barrel ports to vent inside the shroud, and then get directed thru the shroud ports (because that's the only place they can go. Ported barrels require lots of shroud disassembly and cleaning. This may have been part of your barrel nut removal problem, all that grunge builds up inside the shroud, it can get incredibly packed with crap.

There's a reason the ports in the shroud don't line up with the ports in the barrel. The idea is to vent equally from all sides of the barrel so as not to cause any upset to the bullet. Then as the pressure builds in the cavity in the shroud it can vent the equalized pressure out of the top of the shroud.
A couple of things you may want to know about ported DW barrel assemblies:
1. Shoot only jacketed bullets or you may "weld" the barrel to the shroud with lead bits.
2. Clean thoroughly after each range session for the same reason.
3. A 12ga bore brush is just about perfect for the inside of the shroud.
4. I use an emery board to clean the junk off of the outside of the barrel.
Actually, number 4 is no longer true because I only shoot my non-ported barrels now. The cleanup isn't worth it. Also, IMHO, the reduction in muzzle-flip is so negligible as to be almost non-existent.

Thanks guys. I have definitely learned a lesson. Erics wrench is excellent. I will be shopping for a non ported barrel. This could become an addiction.
We are hoping Eric can helpwith that too sooon.

"could become an addiction"?
Could implies that the addiction is only possible, and not a foregone conclusion.
Yeah, Right! You have fallen in with evil companions, my friend, but (wait for it…)
It's still fun.
