Howdy All.
My name is Will and thruout the 80's and 90's I was a fervent shooter and precision
reloader of most all 44 calibers. I own an early DW 445 Supermag serial ETG445S0xx.
I got this gun in the summer of 1990. It may have been the first commercial run of
stainless 445's. I had it repaired a couple of times. Probably from trying to hard to
achieve maximum velocity. I am a (little) smarter now. I hope.
The first available brass was called "Gates 445", made in Mexico, it was literally an
extended .44mag brass and was too flimsy for serious supermag work. The first
few loads stuck in the chambers before I gave up for good on that brass. I would be
willing to trade a copy(s) for an example or 2 of the Starline brass which came out after I
quit reloading and shooting for awhile.
This left me making cases out of rifle brass. I cut, reformed, reamed and trimmed 303
British, 30-40 Krag and 30 USA (which is really 30-40 issued by the US Army).
All of these are tremendously strong and perfect for the job. Each weighs a little
differently and loads must compensate for the volume differences. 30-40 Krag
ended up being my favorite. The rims are beveled somewhat and the volumes seem
more consistant. I would be willing to trade examples of these as well for a few of the
modern cases. They would fill out my collection of nearly all possible ways to load
the .445
If anyone wants to go this route, I can help with some reloading data if requested. As I found out the hard way, the gun will break before this kind of brass gives out. (The cylinder kept getting too much play).
Glad you folks are keeping the DW scene alive!

Heh..I always get "mental images" when I read a post like that..

See I read that I picture a .44 going through a tank (yeah the big green things), What does it take to break a DW supermag?? Does a supermag reach escape velocity?
Great post!

Mine's probably not too far behind yours then... #108. Although I haven't had mine near as long...I was fortunate enough to have bought mine last year, the gun combination I lusted after for many years!
One of our members (IHMSA80x80) is an avid cartridge collecter, and IHMSA shooter, and DW hoarder (woops, did I say that out loud? ... ) and knows lots of good info on what works with the 445's. I'm sure he'll pop in as soon as his feet touch ground, or he gets a decent internet connection...one of those two.
In the meantime, to the ...glad to have ya here!
