So, I'll jump right in:  Have a 715 (.357 stainless) with 4" and 8" bought new in '87.  Shoots fine, but have found the 8" shoots significantly slower than other .357's with same ammo.  Barrel gap is right on.  I'm talking 200 - 250 FPS slower than 6" and 4" revolvers of different makes with exact same ammo.  Only discovered recently when I bought chronograph.  Shoots accurately and consistently.  No visual discrepancies.  Have not slugged barrel.  Crazy, huh?

Welcome to the forum from your northern neighbor in PA.  I wonder if that barrel is tight because you should get great velocity with longer barrels not less, and 200-250 fps is a significant drop.  Slug them and let us know what you find out.  What chronograph did you get?  I don't have one but saw one in a Midway flyer recently that was reasonably priced I thought.  I may have to splurge.

Thanks!  Bought a ProChrono from Midway about 4 - 5 years ago...on sale.  Very reliable, consistent with other known chrono's.  Keeper.   Still using original battery!  Recognized MV issue with the 715 immediately with first few shots across chrono, but set gun aside to evaluate.  Have chrono'ed twice since:  about two years ago, just to confirm what I first saw to see if it had been fluke. Wasn't.  And, today to compare against my "other Wesson" 386 XL (6" scandium).  MV difference was about 250 less with full-power .357 158gr FMJ, and 300 fps less with Underwood 158g Gold Dots.  No evidence that bullets are shaving into the forcing cone.  All those years putting .38's through it punching paper gave no warning.  Until I decided I wanted to shoot some IHMSA field pistol did I start putting much .357 through (just before I bought the chrono).  Bizarre!

Welcome aboard. I can't speak to intelligently on this issue. The great thing about this forum, is that someone will share some info that will help you and educate me!

Thanks, brucertx!  SCORPIO:  Yes, I'm guessing about 1,000 rounds at this point...

Have you always shot jacketed bullets?  If so have you tried running a solvent to remove copper?

I'm planning on using one of my DW 357's for field pistol this year some.  I use my DW 44 and 740 for big bore.

Could the choke bore have something to do with it!  Check with EWK and see if they have a barrel and see if his make a difference.

Welcome from mid America, glad someone back in that place knows a Dan!   Happy New Year

Thanks, Guys!  Dave_Ks:  I had thought about trying a new barrel, and am on the notification list for when they get one.

So, should I try reducing barrel gap from .006?

Cheers
