Hello. My name is Lantz. I'm a 19 year old anthropology student. There's not a whole lot else to say. I'm joining this forum a little prematurely, as I just started buying my first Dan Wesson handgun. (Being a college student, I'm dirt poor, so it's on a 90 day payment plan.) It's a Monson 4 inch barrel .357, Model 14-2(fixed sights, newer barrel style), in decent, but not spectacular condition, and it's costing me 375 bucks. I know, not the deal of a lifetime, but, again, 90 day payment plan so I can't complain, and I know what I'm willing to pay for, even if I can't pay for it immediately.
Oh, funny story, I found the first Dan Wesson I was interested in at a pawn shop. I didn't think much of it at first, but it was cool enough to pike my curiosity, so I went home and researched it. And then I researched it some more. I did a LOT of research, and I decided that Dan Wesson handguns are awesome, and that gun was THE gun I wanted to be my first handgun. (I've had experience with revolvers before, but my family is a Ruger family.) Unfortunately, even though I rushed back to the pawn shop as soon as possible to buy it, someone had already grabbed it up.
But, I had already made my mind that that was the gun I wanted, so I checked every pawn shop and gun store within 30 miles, to no avail. (They are a lot harder to find than I originally thought.) I couldn't find one anywhere, and so I had pretty much decided that I was going to have to wait a long time before I could ever own the Dan Wesson that I wanted. Then, a week ago, my brother comes across 100 dollars, and he wants to buy a cheap shotgun, so we go to several pawn shops, eventually ended up at the pawn shop I had originally seen the Dan Wesson at.
I idly walked over to the handgun counter, and lo and behold, in the exact same place, for the exact same price, what looked like the exact same gun! I asked the lady behind the counter who had brought it back, and she said, "That's what I said, but it was actually a totally different transaction." Needless to say, I immediately put it on a layaway plan(that pawn shop is awesome like that), and in a short time(once I can come up with the last few bucks), I will own my first Dan Wesson handgun. To add onto the luck, I can't think of any other place that would allow payments, so even if I had found what I was looking for anywhere else, chances are it would have been long gone by the time I got the money together to pay for it.
Oh, and my brother picked up a nice little Marlin single shot too.
Long story short, I'm a Dan Wesson owner by divine providence. I'm sure I'll love the revolver, and I'm sure I'll be a big fan of Dan Wesson guns in general. I can't think of a better handgun that a poor person like me could have picked up so semi-affordably . I really like things that are high quality, but that aren't as well-known. (I drive a '67 Buick.) Another passion of mine is antique things. If I had money, my antique gun collection would be much larger, but I'm slowly, slowly working on it.
Finally, I'm joining this forum because I just think it's a good place to learn more.

Welcome. This is the place (for all things Dan Wesson).
Your story sounds a lot like mine. I always wanted a Dan Wesson, but never came across one. A few months ago at the local gun shop I saw the gun of my dreams but foolishly decided to sleep on it. It was gone when i returned a few days later. I will NEVER make that mistake again. I was so bummed I went to every gun store and pawn shop around. I even payed to go to a gun show hoping I'd find one. (I didn't but I did buy a nice little North American Arms 22 mini pistol. It is an unwritten rule that you CAN NOT go to a gun show and return empty handed!)
A few months later, what seemed to be an identical gun showed up at the same gun shop at the same price. I didn't ask. I bought it on the spot. One of the best decisions I've ever made.
Congrats, and Happy shootin'

Welcome to DWF!
A "little wear" usually means that the gun has been shot, I tend to think that guns are made to be shot.
14-2 is a nice gun, you should shoot the heck out of it with no worries.
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Lantz, a few barrels, couple of grips, then scope mount and rings. Oh, and scope. It's sooo natural to put a scope on a model 14-2. You have so many years to shoot and collect. If your major isn't journalism you should consider it. I suggest you buy all you can now before more young folk figure out it's the best deal out there in firearms. A small student loan would buy a bunch of dans. lol. No , Don't do anything foolish. And don't let any progressive commie professors influence you ,especially about gun control.

Awesome, I was considering a scoped barrel setup, due to the lack of an adjustable sight, so I'm glad to hear that it works well. I plan on picking up more guns down the line, but I'm dirt poor, and I just don't have a pressing need to justify spending college money at the moment.
I can't say I haven't picked up a few progressive ideas in college, but I will never stop believing in the importance of guns. As my grandpa used to tell me, "Guns are the great equalizer. They keep the rich afraid of the poor, the big afraid of the small, and the leaders afraid of the people." Even in a degree field as traditionally liberal as mine (anthropology), I think guns can, and should, be appreciated.
Oh, and I'm a little curious about what Maxwell called the "Satin" finish of my gun. I thought it was kinda ugly at a distance, but it's really growing on me. I know any barrels I buy aren't going to be finished that way though, and it could use a refinishing sometime down the line. Any recommendations on where and how to get the gun and any barrels refinished with the satin finish?

Welcome Lantz, from the Southeast (SC). Congratulations on you purchase, you're gonna like the way you look holding that Dan!
