I FINALLY picked up another Dan Wesson revolver! I had one a long time ago, in the early 80s, but have wanted another ever since I had to sell that one. I just got one I need assistance in identifying because it seems somewhat of an oddball!
6in, interchangeable barrel, frame says
DAN WESSON ARMS
MONSON MASS U.S.A.
800Xx
It has the non vent rib barrel and fixed sights
here's a picture
is it a 14-6 like I have heard?
thanks all!

Kevin:
First let me welcome you to the DWF. Glad to hear you found a new (to you) DW. I think you have the model correct. It appears to be a Model 14 with a 6-inch standard barrel assembly.
I may be wrong and there are people here who have much more expertise than I do. They will correct me shortly if I am wrong.
Again, welcome.

That exact Model is 14-2 the 6" barrel is a little less common than 4", and it looks like the finish is in great shape. We hear that "used to have one, but I sold it. Now i have one again" a lot. My guess from your screen name is that you like to do some distance shooting as well, what else are you shooting?
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

I was a 18B in the Army for 10 years, and also a US Army Sniper. I still have a couple SWS that I built and shoot. I am into 1911's and also have a DW Bobtail Classic, and a bunch of other 1911's but have wanted to get back into .357 mag revolvers since about 10 years ago. I have not had a .357mag revolver for quite a few years and now have three, and wil have a few more if a trade I have pending on works out! I have a 340pd, this 14 and a like new early GP100 in 4in heavy barrel. I am due to get in a trade a 686 compped out by the S&W custom shop, a 19-2 in 2.5in, and a Air-weight, all for a super tricked out 10-22 I have.

So was the Service a Law enforcement piece? At least MEANT to be sold to law enforcement? I would guess so hence the naming of it the service... I wonder if that is the case, was mine originally bought by a force and issued to an officer? It would sure be neat to track the history but I am guessing that would be nigh on impossible.

The way I understand it, the service revolvers were geared more toward the law enforcement guys, because of the fixed sights...less chance of a snag on a fast draw. Target revolvers with adjustable sights were aimed more toward the civilian shooter.
I believe though, that both models were available for sale over the counter to civilian & LE alike...and that the target models were the favored choice by most buyers. That's my take on it, for what it's worth.

The 14-2's are considered Service models due to the fixed sight. A true service weapon would maybe more likely have been a 4", and in the matte finish, but that's not to say an LEO couldn't have carried yours.
GP100 heavy sounds pretty nice, a DW 4VH gives the 1911 a real run for the money in the "Perfect Fighting Handgun" race IMHO.
BTW-another good time to thank you, and all our other DWF brothers with current/prior Military Service
