I have a 715 that I bought new in the early or mid eightys, misplaced the receipt and box. Got it out of the gun safe after about 20 years since I shot it last. Can anyone help me with the age and worth of this gun. It's a 357 magnum CTG, Monson Mass. 6" heavy vent barrel, S# 002970, have all tools. Also, my brother has the same gun, except with a 8" and 2 1/2" heavy vent barrels S# 003211, Monson, he bought his on 2/6/88, what would this gun go for. Any help would be appreciated. Look foward to visiting this forum often.

Welcome aboard, Rich.Welcome

As of yet, we don't have any firm manufacture dates by serial number, hopefully one day we will. We have gathered enough info to make some educated guesses, though & I would say that both these guns would have probably been made around the 1975-76 range.

Value is sort of hard to judge these days, because prices seem to be climing lately. I would guess that if the gun is in good shape & still has a good finish, with grips in good condition, you could probably get $350 to $425. It just depends on what someone is willing to pay.

The other gun with the extra barrel in the same good condition, could probably fetch another $50 or more.

Are you guys trying to sell them, or just establish their value?

Welcometo the DWF Rich!  Great story - like finding gold when you pull that DW out of the safe after 20 years!

Did your brother buy his new in '88?

These are both Stainless (715), correct?

Post a picture and let us take a look.

Woops, I didn't catch the stainless part last night. If that's the case, they were made later than when I said. I forget what that article said now, weren't the first stainless guns due to come out right near DW's death?

Both 715"s were bought new, both are stainless, neither are for sale, just trying to establish a value and manufacture date, both are in exellent shape. Haven't figured out the picture part yet.

Welcome Rich! Go out and shoot that Dan Wesson and don't leave it in the safe another 20 years. Dan Wessons are made to be shot, and shot a lot.

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Thanks for the clarifications.

My guessimate on dates were going to be '83 and '87.  As SteveCT noted, Dan Wesson himself hated stainless and stainless was not used to manufacture revolvers until the '80's (after Dan Wesson's death in '78).

Here's my estimate on value (my opinion, so other guys may be able to add insights to this) and of course there would be a +/-$50 range:

Mid '80's M15 = $400

SS adder = +$50

Extra Barrel = +$100

Tools, boxes, etc. add "saleability", but I would say yours is worth ~$450 and your brother's is worth ~$550.

Check under FAQs on the right side of the forum for instructions on posting picture, then let's have a look.

Welcome Rich, This is the place to hang out if you have a thing for Dan Wesson's.

Welcome
