great site ya'll got here. much like the others i belong to (same username) snipershide, 6.8 forums, traditional muzzleloader forum. chok full of experienced and knowledgeable guys/gals.
i have been reloading for a guy i take deer hunting with me, we got him a scoped pistol when his eyes weren't liking a rifle. picked a dw in 44 mag( i understood they were of high quality). i have been making loads and shooting it for years now, always impressed with the accuracy and build quality.
I have just found one for myself. its tucked away in the back of the buried display case in a gunshop in the attic above a resturaunt. its on hold for me, in case any ya'll try and grab it up before i get to it....ha ha. stainless .445, guessing the 8 inch, with the wood grips on it. the rest of the kit is missing but he may still have it all. price= $525.....i won't even ask if this is a good price...ah ha!
one question, what does the "CM" mean after the .445 stamped on gun?
thanks in advance all for welcoming me here.

6point8 to the . So you got a stainless 445 huh? Great find. The model is 7445 as the stainless guns have a "7" before the model number. The "CM", is it before the serial number? Some or many of the Dans have a letter or two in front of the numbers. They mean something. Sometimes there is a "B" for blue, a "S" for stainless (I think) , and sometimes the caliber, e.g. 357, etc. Some would help with the answer to your question.
I'd ask where in NE PA you are located but then someone may invade your restaurant/gun shop and get that 7445 away from you; only kidding we don't do that. I am outside of Allentown.
Welcome again and ask away if you have any questions.

6point8, Another to the from a PA member from the Susquehanna Valley area. As Jaggman stated the letters are somewhat a mystery by times. My Nickel model 41 has a "C" in the serial number, don't know why? When you take possession of the 445SM show us some of the toy and we'll want a range report after you have it to the range to see what you think. Glad to have another PA member in the ranks, and another fellow muzzle loader as well. I hunt with Thompson .50 and .54 Caliber flintlocks.

6point8.
The 445 is tops. A little clarification about model numbers here; if your gun was made in Monson, the model number would be 445S or 445B depending on whether the gun is stainless or blue. I don't believe the 445S was termed a 7445 until Norwich, but that nomenclature may have begun during the Palmer years as well. Someone here will set me straight on that. Also, that designation usually precedes the serial number as in 445S001305. Here's mine.
The C in Phil's .41 is probably preceded by an S for stainless or a B. The serial numbers of most, if not all non-SuperMag Monson guns, after the advent of stainless began with this style of 2 letter designation.
Here are the variations from my collection, all are stainless.
Prefix Model Place of Mfg.
445S . 445 SuperMag (445S) Monson
SE .357 SuperMag (740) Monson
SD .357 Magnum (715) Monson
SC .41 Magnum (741) Monson
SB .44 Magnum (744) Monson
SA .22 Long Rifle (722) Monson
22MS .22 Magnum (22MS) Monson
38+PS Lil' Dan (738+P) Palmer
OK, I know; waaaaay too much information. That is a result of being waaaay too anal.
Again, welcome to our ranks.

thanks again all. well the letters may not be exactly as i have quoted them, upon reflection. i will sure to be posting some pics once in my hands. going to a gun show soon to pick up some 30-40 krag cases to start cutting and loading. or maybe spring for some starline stuff if the budget allows. i intend on using this peice to replace the big bore rifle i sold. i'll stay with open sights and set a 100yard zero.
i'm in the "muddy water" area of pa also. (indian meaning of susquehanna) i have a lyman and cva and pietta 1858 for my black powder. my father in law is the pa rep for tma and has racks of bp guns...muskets too.
i hunt all over pa, gave up fishing and now hunt year round. i do varmit removal for some farmers in area also. being a military sniper and having built my own "stick" its right up my alley.
timing for the big dan would mean i'll use the tax money for it. unless i can convince my wife i could get an early birthday present.
by the way the revolver looks to be in great shape and the old timer in shop believes he has the box with the rest of the "parts"! cant wait, feel like a kid again.
question......will barrels swap between a .44 and a supermag?

Jaggman, please let me add one little adjustment for ya...the "7" in the stainless models started in the Mosnon plant, when they added the stainless guns to the catalog. I imagine that it was mainly done as a way to keep them straight when ordering a new gun or related pieces from the catalog. They didn't actually roll mark the "7" on the gun itself, from anything I've seen so far.
Anyhoo, to the forum, 6.8! Glad to have ya here.

CF:
You are mostly correct. All of my stainless guns for which I have the original boxes have a 7 prefix to the model number, except 2. Those 2 are 445 SM's and the labels on the boxes clearly say 445, not 7445. They also have a separate area for designating the finish; mine both have SS hand written in that space.

They sure are! And I guess if they stayed with one numbering system through the years, that would help some too.
BTW, the stainless guns you have with boxes & a 7 in the prefix...are those all Norwich guns? If so that's pretty cool, as I have yet to find my first Norwich gun.

Sorry CF, I must have mislead you. My guns are all Monson guns except the 738+P (Lil' Dan) which is a Palmer gun. So the stainless guns with boxes marked 7xx are Monson made.
Sorry for the confusion. I'm major dyslexic, so I think I type that way too.

Woops sorry, I went back and read your post again & decided that I must have jumped to the conclusion that many of them were Norwich guns...my bad.
It helps if I read posts after I've had my daily coffee allotment.

6.8,
Yes the 44 barrels swap with the 44sm barrels.
A sniper, oh I think I would have enjoyed that.............oh well I'll grow up sometime.
Supermagfan and I are PA members and maybe we could organize a match down the road..........445's for sure.

Zoommb,
I double checked my nickel 41 and there is no other letter other than C in the serial number, for what it is worth in develpoing our data base.
Phil:
I think that would be because it began life as a blue gun, or at least not stainless which would have an S preceding the C. I gotta get control over my fingers. Unfortunately I can think faster than I can type so I make confusing statements some times. I completely forgot about the blue guns.
Sorry for the misstatements.

sure we could get together for some blasting..........we snips have get togethers ever now and then. and i even go to some of the "frontstuffer" rondevous. I'm sure if we post time and place for a DW or supermag shootfest we could get a turnout. I know of several ranges and clubs throughout eastern Pa.......maybe make sumptin happen?
what type of match? steel rams and creedmoor positions? or punch paper from bench....or maybe just a produce smashfest?
3 new memebers in one day? they say good things come in threes......but i don't consider myself a "good thing" at all ! ha ha.
thanks for the info on 44 and 445 barrel interchangability. i have heard that the supermags use diff threads in frame. seems to be untrue, i'm glad.
tnx again all.
