jaggman,
there is a club in northern pa on a nice peice of property, that i belong to, and its a "ring what ya bring" kinda place. there are some steel rams and chickens in the club house. and i have some steel spinners. no organized real steel events though...for pistols anyway. there is a black powder steel event there i go to twice a year. setting a truckload of steel targets out in the field sure is fun though, esp with the occasional apple or squash or pumpkin in the mix.
it would be nice to start a steel type shoot and spark interest in it. mostly the guys i know who shoot pistol go to ny state...there are some shoots up there. i'll inquire next time i'm at a club meeting. so to answer yer question, sorry i was wayy of track there for a while, there are some pistol matches in ny state...steel and paper, and cowboy stuff.

boy just got off the phone today with shop that has the blaster waiting for me. he said he found the box and all thats in it is the tools and book, no barrels. oh well. at least i got the wrench and box. he also mentioned that he has had that pistol in his case for a verylong while....and it appears to have never been used....looks like new.
can't wait to get up there later this next week to finally bring 'er home.......and yes guys i'll post some pics of my "find". I already got a line on some krag brass to make up some supermags. but i'll run to the range with some of my whitetail 44 mag loads to try 'er out though for sure!
so i guess i'll be looking for a 4inch stainless 44 barrel and shroud....anybody know of any.....laying around? ha ha ha.

6point8. I can't wait to see pics of the blaster. If I understood your post you should know a 44 mag barrel will fit a 445 but the shroud wont work because the extractor rod is to long. If I miss understood, Sorry. Good luck and waiting on some.

yea i got that the barrel would work...but didn't know about the extractor rod thing. thanks alot. just saved me from buying the wrong one!!!! or just cut the rod off? ha ha ha.
already got holster and rubber grib lined up too.
i see in some pics some pistols have a barrle nut that sticks out some...like with and external type 12 point bearing surface? i will deff be looking into something like that...or even machining myself some sort of nut for myself.
what is the torque to be applied to nut? i know it is probably in the manual but just thought i'd ask for curiousities sake.

Just snug it up hand tight and check it from time to time. The external nuts are the earliest models that were later changed to recessed nuts. No reason you couldn't have an external nut made though if you wanted one.

Finally got her home!!!!
Palmer gun .445 CTG. 8" only. box is pretty beat but tools are like new as is instruction booklet.
only thing not liking upon teardown, clean, adjust, lube, and my inspection....is the rear sight fixture is crooked. and the elevation screwhole seems to be off center, thus tipping the rear blade? i removed and checked the screw, its straight. but hole is drilled off center of rear sight cut.
brass n the way, holster on the way. still looking for a good rubber grip.
and in serious need of the 4 or 6 inch barrel assembly. like the alaskan guide one. i would even use a blued one if i need. lots of bear up here where im at. this will be my hiking companion. and deer and bear hunter also, but with big barrel installed.

Sexy, a VH8Slotted is my favorite configuration. Just my opinionif you have a 4inch made a VH4 slotted would be really cool, and I have never seen one of those before. Hmm I may have to consult EWK on that thought. Although a 4 inch 445 is cool, you had better hang on. The canted sight is a bummer but shouldn't hurt anything other than looks, did you try rotating the spring or maybe changing it. I realise that is overly simple, but sometimes we get lucky.

VH8S is also my favorite shroud. I have 2 VH8's which are not slotted and I'm going to get them slotted by DW. That's the configuration I first fell in love with.
Slotted shrouds were only available in the following configurations:
- V8S - Vented (not heavy) 8 inch slotted.
- VH8S - Vented heavy 8 inch slotted.
- VH8SC - Vented heavy 8 inch slotted with compensator (Norwich (only?)).
- V10S - Vented (not heavy) 10 inch slotted (some of which also have slots on the underside of the shroud).
Remember the originals had SuperMag engraved on the side of the shroud in the middle (lengthwise) so there would not be room for standard slots on a 6-inch barrel, or room for any slots much bigger that a round hole on a 4-inch barrel.

Mike-
What does DW charge to slot a shroud, and will they slot any shroud, or just SM shrouds?
I agree that they are beautiful, and I'd like to slot an SS shroud and back it with a blued barrel.
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Yes Ed, Phil had some slotted but it was a while ago and he said he thought it cost $85 each. So the price seems to have gone up like everything else.
Did you just send the shrouds in to Keith and ask to have shrouds cut, or did you have to give hime dimensions?
Can you post pics of the shrouds you had cut?
Thanks,
-Mike

Went out and shot it today!!!!
my starline brass is on backorder....so i went and cruised some local shops for a case to put the cannon in. and guy behind counter got all excited when i mentioned 445, cause he had 300 starline brass taking up space on a shelf. and he had a nice metal locking pistol case, i practically "stole" the supplies from him. so needless to say i spent all night last night loading. and then off to the range today...in single digit weather. good point, i had the range all to myself. i have been scary lucky lately, i'm being real careful ya know?
shot real nice. here's some pics. (that i hopefully resized properly.)
happiness is a warm Supermag on a single digit day!!!
15 yards. bottom target is me shivering badly standing shooting offhand. top target was slow fire from a rest with a break between shots to warm hands in pants. nice 6 round group. another stroke of luck that the first recipe i threw into the cases is an ace? or can it get better?
If i can get ahold of either 44 or 445 barrel and shroud, i will lengthen ejector rod slot (if necc) and maybe get artsy with some flutting? friend has a machine shop. i have done spiral cuts and such on 10/22's. i'm not sure. kinda like 'em original?
so i guess im high offhand, and low on bench.

Ibruce,
i pulled screw and drifted pin out. and found that the hole is plumb but off-center in cut for rear sight. i took it all apart hoping to find dirt or something yaknow? guess that's what ya get with a Palmer?
yer right it doesn't seem to bother me too much, i'll get used to it. but i do need a new front sight post, one not as wide as a barn door! i am not scoping this one. wanna shoot opens. maybe look for new option for sights.
ideas?

I was thinking of a custom job such as a 4" with one long slot and no engraving. May not work just an Idea. Think about how much easier it would be if DW had left the caliber desigination off their shrouds. Not as much fun but easier to mix and match.
