If you are loading your own it would depend on the powder and bullet style.  I uses about every type, weight and style of bullets advailable.

I've taken a lot of PA whitetail with the DW--doesn't matter what you hit them with, they are thin skinned, and as long as you take a vitals shot, they drop pretty quickly.

I originally used hornady XTP's and they worked fine.  Then I started casting heavy bullets and they worked fine also.

Keep your shots within a reasonable distance and you'll be fine.

Welcome to the forum!  Nice to finally have local join the forum.  I'm in Salem!

I'm also a member of the Roanoke Rifle and Revolver club so if you are not familiar you might want to check out here site.  I'm pretty new at reloading so don't have much to share but I'm sure some of the other guys can give you specifics.

Welcome to the forum and enjoy the site.

Welcome to theDWF Sign

I'm pretty new to the reloading scene too, so I can't give anything worthwhile. Congrats on getting yourself back into the DW scene.Smile

I haven't hunted deer, but I know 200gr cast are available online.

Thanks all, great welcome here!!!

How heavy of a cast should I use and what is the max distance? 50-75 yards for a clean kill.

158 to 180 grn bullets 75 yrds or under. ideal is 180 grn at 50 yrds. I've seen deer

taken past 100 yrds with a .357 but I've also seen alot not recovered with shots at

that distance.
