I am looking to purchase my first DW 15-2 with 6" standard barrel and was informed this was the place to research them.
My dad carried a modified carried a 15-2VH 6" on the police force when we were younger, became an icon to us growing up!
This is the one I'm looking at:
a 15-2 with a 6" interchangeable barrel, standard shroud. The gun was built in Monson (apparently that matters), original wood grip, slight holster wear at the end of the barrel, the barrel nut has been molested some, the rest of the blueing is nice. Gun locks up very tight.
He wants $300 for it. Just gun, no tools or case.
I'm not sure if this is a decent price. It will require a new barrel nut so I am going to offer him $250 for it...is that decent?
Look forward to talking with y'all.

JonFrank, if this seller is asking $300 for a DW with a bit of character marks on it...bear to mind that not all seller's ideas of a "decent" gun are alike...same with sellers gun descriptions.
Seeing is believing. Sooo...
The part about the barrel nut concerns me, beware of a badly stripped barrel nut. A new nut is easily found through EWK's site, but stripped barrel threads can prove more problematic.
Let us know how you make out & welcome to the

Welcome and Good Luck! Friday I ran across a DW 15-2 at the local gun shop that was Monson serial #251xxx and had all of the blueing removed from the frame and cylinder...they wanted $379 for it. It seemed to be mechanically sound, but - caveat emptor! I have bought good guns with very slight wear and tear with an extra barrel, extra grip, barrel wrench for under $350 in the past year. Take a close look at what you are getting, and refer to the thread in the Revolver section regarding purchasing a used revolver.

Hey Jon,
I'm a newbie but my .02 is if you can spend somewhere in the lower 200s then you can afford to fiddle with it. You can find a Dan with a heavy shroud in good shape for 375 or so. That is a standard shroud, take a look at some of the other shroud styles. I personally think a vented heavy shroud is a beautiful thing. Hope this helps.

Jon-
Welcome to DWF. That 15-2 is basically a nice revolver, but:
1) You will be replacing the cracked grip- $20-50
2) The shroud has some substantial wear- $20-30 to reblue, if you so desire
3) The barrel nut will take some time and $$ for you to fix, including buying a new barrel nut- $30. If you have some basic mechanical aptitude the barrel nut problem is pretty fixable
$250 is a good offer, to put that in perspective, I can get a 15-2 6VH in excellent condition in a local (CT) gunshop for $399
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

You guys have been awesome with the responses, very informative and welcoming. The mechanical bit isn't really an issue, so if all it takes is coaxing that barrel nut out and replacing it…simple.
Let me ask a DWA newb question. If I bought this gun for $250, got a grip, played with it for awhile; could I eventually sell the standard 6" shroud and put that money into a 6VH and still be in the $350 ballpark? Is this wishful thinking?!
Also, my dad's 15-6VH has a DEEP blueing, almost black, this particular gun has turned a bit plum, is this character or a defect?

You might end up a little more than $350, but you would end up with the very best $400 6" .357 you will ever find. You might even find that you like the standard shroud in 6". I love the VH in 4":
" alt="" width="640" height="480" />
but my original 15-2 wore it's 6" standard shroud for almost 30 years before I ever put a 4" on it. It now lives on with it's original 6" shroud (in my son's hands) gobbling up every variety of outrageous reloaded ammunition he can stuff into it.
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

The plum coloring is only cosmetic. Many DW's and other brands turn plum with time. We call it the Barney effect.
The DW is surely fixable and it "probably" won't be hard to do. Only you can decide value. Good luc and keep us informed.
OH, and by the way to the .

Welcome to the DWF. I hope you get a good deal here. I would offer $225 and stop at a max of $250. That grip appears to be zebrawood, so if you want to replace it with the same it will cost a substantial amount of money. That's assuming you want an original style grip.

Thanks guys, I went to talk to the current owner I mentioned I was very interested but just not at $300 due to some minor details especially the barrel nut being stripped (my dad and I couldn't get it off with his tool).
He didnt seem to want to budge, and I guess I understand his point of view so I left my cash in my pocket and didn't even present a counter. He said he would think about it. It's likely that isn't the DW for me afterall.
Thanks for all your input and I will likely troll this site until I land my own model 15
Thanks
PS: I really wanted to announce I was the new owner…o'well

Welcome to the Forum ( albeit a little late)
I have struggled with two stripped barrel nuts to date. Its not a lot fun, doable but frustrating.
Around here a "nice" 51-2 with 6V or 6VH go from $350 to $425. I did pay $325 for one with a buggered up barrel nut, and still sold it for a $5 profit, but now I own 4 cans of koil and 3 feet of grade 8 threaded rod.
Soap Box, Ballot Box, Ammo Box
in that order.

Go to local shops and maybe a gun show. I actually saw one on Gander Mountain's used gun site which is what first infected me. I am sure the auction sites have deals from time to time but is getting harder and harder to come by. I know if you bide your time you will surly find your true love, i mean gun...
