The IHMSA guns were sold to IHMSA Members, who were given the opportunity to order their revolver custom Serial Numbered with their IHMSA Member number.
One of our Members will be along soon to share more info. He is THE EXPERT on IHMSA.

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Thanks, I suspected it was something with the IHMSA but didn't know it may be serialized to a particular person. The more I search on here, the pieces of the puzzle are fitting together. From what i'm reading, I think it's a 44 V10S It's a Monson, MA gun and has what looks to be hand engraving on the opposite side of the frame near the grip.
I shot silhouette a couple times 25+ years ago locally but with a 22. I don't think the club had any affiliation but maybe they did?
Anyhow I got the gun for hunting. Hunted with my 6" Colt Trooper about the same time but got to the point where the deer were getting scarce and longer shots were required so I switched over to the long guns to put meat in the freezer.
Now it's more for fun so when this opportunity came up I decided to get back into handgun hunting.
I'm planning to mount a scope of some sort as the old eyes need a little help. Any suggestions on mounts or scopes would be appreciated.

Digital camera crapped out last weekend so as soon as I get another, I'll snap some pics.
Looking at the shroud types, it's a V10 not a V10S. Previous owner said it's a model 44. What's the difference between the 44 and 744?
Brushed stainless and it has the Houge black rubber fingergroove grip.

If your .44 is stainless, it is a model 744. For Dan Wesson revolvers, a 7 at the beginning of the model # always stands for stainless. A model 44 would be blued.
Welcome to the forum, and looking forward to pics, you picked up a cool DW.

Well the new point and shoot camera came so here's a few pics. If I did this correctly, the images should double in size if clicked.
The S/N with the last 4 digits X'd over.
and finally here's the hand engraving I mentioned earlier. Any ideas what this is all about? I slid the grip down to take the pic because the last character is normally partially covered.
Thanks for all the Welcomes.
I'm looking forward to learning more about my DW and putting some rounds downrange.

That extra engraving really looks like something that someone did themselves. It would be very hard for me to believe that the factory did that, this might possibly be something that someone did for insurance or anti-theft reasons.
Does that number match up with the S/N in any way? The S/N should be the IHMSA Member Number, I think.

That would be my guess, too. It's probably a personal number that's easy for a previous owner to remember, in case the gun was stolen. Or, who knows, it could be a police case number from when the gun was in fact stolen at some point!
In any case, that's a great looking 744, thanks for sharing the
