I know very little about handguns, particularly revolvers, but I've had this Monson DW in my closet since 1995, after making a sporting trade with my particularly foolish brother.  In truth, I paid only $150.  It's only recently that I brought the gun out and decided to research its history, and do some shooting. To my surprise, I've found that I couldn't have a more interesting, beautiful, and accurate gun.

I'm guessing from the serial number (211xxx) and the CTG designation that it was made in the mid to late 70's.  The 6" barrel and shroud are in excellent condition with no scratches or pitting, and I just finished restoring the standard grip.  I'm not sure if the barrel is a VH or a V.

Besides missing the rear sight elevation screw (thread size?), the only problem I find with the gun is that when the trigger is pulled "very" slowly, the chamber stops just short of rolling and locking into place. With a normal or slightly slow pull, the mechanism seems to work just fine.

Can anyone tell me if this is typical of older DW's, and if the problem can be, or needs to be corrected?  I'm guessing that it's a faulty or worn spring.

Thanks for your help.  I really, really like this gun.

R.

Dan's like to be cleaned every thirty years or so.  Give it a good cleaning and a set of fresh spring and it would be very happy.

That is a 1979 gun. The correct designation will be:

15-2 # **

The # will be barrel length

The ** will be shroud style. V=Vent, H=Heavy, VH=Vent Heavy, no designation is assigned to the Standard shroud, solid top rib, minimal underlug.

Your cylinder advance problem may be caused by an overly tight barrel gap, it should be minimum .002", the standard is .006". DW cylinders are not necessarily true and square up front, check all chambers, and gap to the tightest one.

And, as noted, clean it, lube it, maybe change springs.

Welcome to DWF.

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Thanks folks, for the info and suggestions.  I don't have the barrel tool yet but I will definitely be checking the gap before shooting again.  I think it might be a little tight.

And I'll try to get a good photo up tomorrow.  Thanks again.

Welcome to the forum !!!  I'd check the b/c gap first.  And give it a good cleaning.

Dang, you guessed it.  I guess there's just no real privacy anymore.  Thanks for the welcome.

I'm going to post some photos of my new found 15-2 6VH.

I think Rooster would love this gun!

I had to improvise a barrel wrench today, but managed to easily loosen the nut and reset the gap.  I also gave it another good cleaning, but still the chamber was only falling into place on about 50% of the normal trigger pulls and seemed to be getting worse.

Frustrated, I looked the gun over closely, trying to decide whether or not I should remove the sideplate and have a look inside.  To my surprise, I found both sideplate screws to be loose, especially the top (short) screw.  I torqued them securely into place, and like magic, the chamber began falling correctly into place with every pull.  I learned something today.

I love this DW.

R,  order a wrench soon make it easy and with out damage.  All of us have suffered the stuck nut at some point!  EWK has great wrenches and ships quick!  Glad you discovered the problem now take a look inside and clean it up and lube it down! cool-pics
