My name is Doc and I live in central Florida on the Gulf of Mexico. I am the new owner of a Model NO. D11. From what I've read, I think the gun was mfg in 1970 or 1971. I hope someone will let me know if that is accurate or not. I'll try to post some pictures. The gun is evidently the service model and it shoots sweetly, just as straight as I can aim it. The serial number behind the cylinder release is 45xx. It is a glossy blued finish except for the top of the barrel,  shroud and receiver where it is dull blue.

Welcome to DWF, you are right on with the date, I'd say it's definitely 1970. One of your pictures is showing a purple hue to the frame, we sometimes refer to this as a "Barney". This is not uncommon in early DW's, and in some other brands as well, most notably Rugers. It looks to be in great condition, you got a nice one there.

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Nice find & welcome to the dwf

It's not often to see a D11 in glossy blue, most are matte blue. Here's mine, as the seller had it listed, although this one's a 38 Spl...

dwf-welcome to dwf Doc .. thanks for the introduction and cool-pics of your Porkchop. I always like the Plum hues of the Barney guns.  We've got quite a few members here in Florida and get together from time to time for a Meet & Shoot.

Thank you everyone for the welcome. I can attest to the "infectious" quality of these guns, I want to build my own Pistol Pack!

Stinger, a Florida meet and shoot sounds like fun so let me know next time.

Welcome and you have the beginning of it all!  Now for a W12 then 14 & 15 all in the pork!   Hey know that our own inventor, on the side bar right, has put out some adapters so as to add the later model shrouds!   Check it out EWK!

Welcome,  that is a very nice Model 11. You might think about putting a later model Hand in at some point. The first change DW made to the gun was a hand with a slot that the hand spring fit into. The original was bent around the hand and would wear and fail with hard use.  I have an extra 21/2" shroud when the time comes. The 12 sided nut is one of the rarest things in Dandom. They only included one in a pistol pack. However, Seth Wesson is making them with a CNC machine and you can find them on ebay. You can use them on model 14 and 15s if you use the 1/4" longer Barrels that all other Dans use. Lastly, your gun has the sweet short action hammer stroke.

Doc, I have a hell of a time with the PM. Sometimes it works and other times it won't. I mean I won't. I wrote a long reply but couldn't send it. The spring in the grip is the main or hammer spring. The hand spring wraps around the transfer bar which rises when you pull the trigger and enables the hammer to actuate the firing pin. The other end of the hand spring pushes against the hand, enabling the hand to turn the cylinder. The hand is also attached to the trigger and rises to engage the rachet on the cylinder when you pull the trigger. The hand spring is made out of piano type wire. On the improved hand around serial number 20,000, the end of the spring fits into a little slot on the side of the hand and does not rub against metal. I learned the hard way when my model 12 hand spring broke when I first recieved it. I fixed it (a source of great pride) but it was difficult. If I was to do it over, I would use the new style hand and spring.

Karl Lewis, the designer of the Dan Wesson pioneered the use of the coiled mainspring which was first used in the Colt Trooper MK iii. He had already designed the Dan Wesson but Colt wasn't interested in the interchangable Barrels but they used his FIRST modern Lockwork in the Colt. The coiled mainspring in a grip tang enabled Dan Owners to use many styles of grips without expensive Smith work and to change it on a whim in a minute.

Thanks, Ole Dog,

That was a one-hour gunsmith class squeezed into a paragraph, and I appreciate it. I will check on the  new style hand and spring and where to buy them.

Do you think CZ is the best source?

I really like the looks of the two. Especially in the case. I want to get a model 12 with the adjustable sights.
