Hi!
So I just purchased a Dan Wesson 44 mag. I haven't had chance to fire it yet but the action seems nice and crisp, and with everything I've been hearing about these guns, I'm really excited to go shooting! I like to tinker/modify, so this seemed like a good fit... at least as far as wheel guns go.
Sorry if there's a better place to ask (if so, just point me in the right direction) but can anyone tell me what the length of my barrel is? It measures 9.5" from the front of the cylinder to the end of the muzzle. Does that make it a 9.5" barrel? (sorry if thats a stupid question) From what I've come across online, all the other Dan Wessons I've seen have been in whole inch variations (4", 6", 8", etc.) I've also read a couple places suggesting I could have an 8" barrel, but I'm not sure how that would work... Any help would be appreciated!

Welcome to the DWF. The gun is a Model 44V10. So the barrel assembly is a vented rib, 10", standard profile. The easiest way to tell from a distance with no other reference is to count the vent openings and double the number. You have five openings and so it is a 10" barrel. The actual barrel screws into the frame to within a few thousandths of an inch of the cylinder, which accounts for the lost half inch.
Nice looking iron by the way. Now you need to keep your eyes open for 6 and 8 inch barrel assemblies, unless you always plan to shoot from a rest or are as big as Hoss.
Best Regards,
Ron
Technically, the glass is always full; half liquid, half air....
Well! I measured mine and now I can speak with authority. From muzzle to forcing cone it is .... 9 3/4". It is much easier to call it 10". A quick method for large frame (they are all vented ) is to count the vents as Ron says. I think the 1/4" deficiency was because of weight limitations for IHMSA. The small frame is a full 10"s .

Good answer Ron. That is the best way to tell at a distance.
Welcome Kenton, glad to have you on the DWF. That is a good looking piece you picked up. Did you get the barrel wrench and gauge and the instruction booklet. The booklet comes in handy if your new to Dan Wesson but it is a very simplistic design. Like rwsem mentioned earlier you'll want to find some other barrels for it. Trust me when I say you are gonna love the feel of this wheel gun all around.

Thanks for the info guys! Yeah, it's a beast of a barrel. I got a cheap bushnell scope with the gun so I'll probably keep it on this barrel for some plinking, but I just bought a 8" full lug shroud so I'm waiting for that in the mail. It didn't come with any of the tools so I'm gunna hafta buy those too. Now I'm on the hunt to pick up a barrel tube for it! Also looking to pick up a fiber optic front sight for the new shroud.
