Hello everyone, I obtained my first Dan Wesson today, it's a model 15 with 8 inch barrel that appears to have not been shot much if at all since it left the factory. It has a 5 digit serial number that seems to have been made in '77, blueing is perfect not one scratch that I could find anywhere, turn lines havn't even worn all the way through the blue on the cylinder.
I noticed at the dealer it still had packing grease on and under the star that was making it a little sticky. After I got it home I took the side plate off and removed the lockwork so that I could clean all the dried grease off of everything. Gonna put it all back together in the morning and see how she shoots.
Doing a bit of research online last night one of the things I read mentioned MIM parts in the lock work on some models which made doing a trigger job a bad idea. Is this true and if so could someone tell me if mine has these MIM parts?

Welcome to the and congrats on your first Dan. That's a very popular model. does it have adjustable rear sights or a fixed sight? That would help to determine exactly which model 15 you have, although the date may also tell the story. Is a Monson or Palmer gun?
Well, this would help a bunch: .
Oh, after you shoot this Dan you'll probably develop the infamous which causes one to and look for deals high and low.
Glad to have you aboard and looking forward to a range report.

to the . Early DW's had sintered metal parts in the lock work which could be an issue when honing the sear, however I do not know how to tell if you have that or not, but I believe if you follow Shoots method here you will be pleased with your Dan.

to our forum. A perfect first Dan Wesson you found there. What part of Kentucky are you from? I am in Northern KY and have a range at Crittenden. If you live close, bring that Dan Wesson up and shoot some silhouette! We are having a silhouette practice day Friday and Saturday, June 25, 26 and a match on Sunday the 27th. I will be there all weekend. It is a great opportunity to try that DW out and shoot silhouette if you've never done it before. There will be lots of other guns you can try, since I usually bring a bunch.

Welcome to DWF. Yours is a 1977, pretty much the same as mine. I suggest you clean it up good inside and out, replace the springs, and shoot it some. Cleaning and new springs may do more for a 33 year old DW than you might think.
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Thanks for the welcome and the invite, I live just south of Lexington in Wilmore, I probably won't be able to make it up there this weekend but, if you do this sort of thing every month or something I'm sure I could make it up sometime. What sort of load would you reccomend for silhouette shooting?
I got it all cleaned up and put back together, I had to scrape off what looked like dried cosmoline on and in everything. Oiled it up pretty good which smoothed out the DA pull and took the creep out of the SA pull, still not as light as my 686P but it should work.
Spent most of my day loading .38 and .357 and will spend tomarrow shooting some of them so I can't give a range report yet. I did get a few pics for yal to look at though, hope ya like 'em.
