Hi DW guys,

I'm from Ohio and wanted a revolver for deer hunting.  I'd been looking for a Dan Wesson for over a year because of the reported accuracy.  Last weekend I picked up a used model 15 with 6" non-vented barrel and searched for this site looking for help with scope mounting.  From what I've seen so far, this is a great site - lots of info and good people.

I like hunting & fishing, archery, airguns, firearms and the like.  Below are a couple of pictures of the new to me DW.  I't's not perfect, but I love it already!

Roger

Boy, that's a real beauty!Drool Doesn't look like it's been fired much, either.

Welcome aboard, I'm sure we'll be able to get you fixed up with good scope mount ideas, if you haven't already decided on one.Smile

Looks to be in great shape for 30+ years old, and welcome aboard.

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

How did I get in on this so late?  Cool Pics there on that DW.  It looks new!  Very high quality photos too.  I sense a calendar photographer in the making...

Dwf Guys,

Thank you all for the welcoming and kind words! ! ! !

I haven't decided what to do about a scope mount.  I'm thinking the options are:

  1. Drill & Tap current shroud
  2. Buy vented shroud
  3. Find mount something like SHOOTS has on his S&W
  4. ?

This raises a few more questions for me:

1.  What would a vented shroud cost and where would I buy it?  What's the chances of just buying another 6 or 8" barrel with vented shroud?  Would this be the better way to go?

2.  I search on the internet for a mount like SHOOTS for my gun but didn't find one.  I suppose I should call B-Square & other manufacturer.  What do you suggest?

3.  Is there a "best" .357 round for deer hunting at under 50 yards?  What ammo should I shoot for fun?

Moderator, if you want to break this up and/or move this somewhere, let me know.

Thanks,

Roger

Roger:

In the right hand column there is a link to a page which gives instructions for ordering parts.  Basically call 607.336.1174 select ext. 21 and if you get voice mail, leave a message for Priscilla with your name and phone number and specify that you want to place an order; she'll call you back.

There's a link here somewhere for the current price list which I can't find.  So I have gotten out my personal copy and here's what you can buy with prices.

BA15VH6 -- Complete vented heavy 6 inch barrel and shroud: $304.00.

BA15VH8-- Complete vented heavy 8 inch barrel and shroud: $374.00.

Or you could just get an S15VH6 which is a vented heavy 6 shroud only for $214.00.

Smile

You could ask SHOOT if you see him around.

That SHOOT guy is a moron…Screwy

Well, if you want a B-square mount, I have a few of the clamp on rib type for sale– they are ugly, but they are built like a tank and work well.

If you want a vented barrel assembly, you could check the auction sites, or just keep beating me until I sell you one of my spares (if I have any left)…

or,  you can find another plain shroud in "hunting condition", and have it drilled/tapped.  That would leave you a minty one for show and open sights.

I have a few 15's in the works for other guys, as soon as I get them set up with their barrel needs, I'll post what barrels I have available.

***EDIT*** much as I hate to do it...  this guy has both 6 and 8 inch available for reasonable price right now.

Just my two cents worth. Buy the second shroud, drill and tap and mount the scope on the less desirable of the two. You then will be able to swap between open sights and a scope in under 3 minutes and stand a good chance of POI being right on, still need to check though. Just my opinione so good luck.

That's exactly what I'd do too, if it were my gun...mostly because the shroud that's currently on it looks too perfect, it would make me sad to drill & tap it.Frown One of the ones in Shoot's link should go for a reasonable price.Smile

Thanks, SHOOT, for the link and guys for the advice.  I like the thinking here.  We'll see what I can do!  I notice you're saying to drill & tap.  Is that what you recommend rather than a clamp on?  If so, why?

Thanks again,

Here's some comparison of the two most common clamp on mounts:

https://www.danwessonforum.com/?page_id=3/general-messages/clamp-on-scope-mounts/

For either of these, you need a vent rib shroud, doesn't look like yours is a vent shroud, so they won't work for you. If you gotta buy a shroud anyways, might as well get an extra and just drill & tap, and leave it mounted. At that point, I'd look for an 8" barrel/shroud, and really set up for some "reach out and touchability".

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

What about this one on the S&W, is this a custom job or can one be bought for a DW ?

Not a vent rib.
