Hi, I bought my DW Model 15-2 .357 Mag revolver back in 1977, just a year after my 21st birthday (yeah, I'm an old fart) and I love that firearm. For various dumb reasons, I hadn't shot it in over 25-years, but then my wife started begging me to taker her out shooting...her biggest mistake of her life! Well, now that DW has lots of brothers, sisters and cousins packed into the gun safe and all of them get shot, well, maybe all but one vintage WWII Mauser...but that's for a different forum...
Anyway, I've started shooting ISSA matches in the last couple of years and at least 3-times a year, I shoot my DW revolver in the match. My problem is, I load with CCI primers (pretty hard primers) and I get anywhere from 1 - 3 "light strikes" in every cylinder load when shooting double action. No issues when shooting SA, however, ISSA is a speed event and shooting a DA revolver SA just doesn't get me in the competition. The hammer placement, etc. just doesn't make for a fast round. I need to be able to shoot DA and would like any advice on adjusting the mainspring to give a harder hit on the primer. My S&W Hwy Patrolman had a similar issue, but was easily rectified between stages by tightening the spring tension screw on the grip frame. I can't find any similar adjustment screw on my DW.
So, questions:
1. Can the mainspring (hammer spring) be adjusted on the Model 15-2 without disassembling the gun?
2. If so, where/how?
3. Anyone know where I could get some good literature, manuals, etc. that would have photos and/or illustrations for disassembly/re-assembly of the Model 15-2, particularly to replace original springs with heaver ones?
4. Yes, I know I could probably just go to shooting Federal primers and cure the problem with no changes to my all-original DW revolver...but I don't wanna! All my other guns run those primers without issue and I know I'm not going to be sending a blown-up primer tube to Dillon for replacement...my wife hates it when I blow up something...
Any advice, suggestions, or best, past experience on this issue will be most appreciated.
I am not a loader or a competitive shooter but I stayed in a Holiday Inn Express, so,
1: you have to disassemble the gun to change the mainspring.
2: the factory mainspring is 9lbs I think. Wolff reduced power springs are 8lbs and 71/2lbs. The 71/2 is too light for most primers. If the factory spring is giving light strikes you may have to change primers.
3:"The Average Joe Tuneup" in Gunsmithing is explicit instructions on how to disassemble a small frame Dan. Actually very easy. Any problems you encounter can be rectified by forum members. I have a cleaning rod sans screw on tip dedicated to holding down the guide rod while you relieve the pressure.
4: If the grip screw is too tight it can affect the hammer travel. Good luck.
