Greetings All,

My name is Jim, and I live in SW Louisiana, near Lake Charles.  I've had an 8" DW .44 Mag since I bought it new around 1980.  I've fired it very little, but recently pulled it out and started fiddling with it.

I recently took up hunting wild hogs (with a .30-30 so far), and I have an urge to try the .44 on a pig hunt.  I've been shopping for a scope, and just ordered a clamp-on mount that I hope will do the job.  I'll be on the forum asking you guys a lot of questions!

I'm 53 years old, and an avid handgunner, although I don't really have the chance to shoot nearly as much as I'd like to.  I shoot just about everything from .22LR up through .44 Mag and .45ACP.  My favorites are my .44's, .45's, and (go ahead and laugh) .380's.  Dunno why, but I have a soft spot for the little guys, and have had a half dozen or so of 'em.  Guess that's irrelevant on a DW forum!

Anyway, I'm looking forward to learning a lot from you guys!

Best regards,

Jim

Regards,

Jim

Welcome Kilowatt3.  You work for the power co? rofl  Sorry couldn't resist.  Glad you signed up and joined the mad house.  We are full of info and other stuff, but we do have a good time here.

That .44 is a good shooter and ya now Post Pics. rofl   Couldn't resist again.  As far as other brands go there is a thread for those too. Always interested to see what else is in the safe.

I have not hunted with a hand gun but there are a few members who do so I'm sure you'll hear from them soon, especially SFM, he just got back from a successful hunt.

Glad to have you aboard

Well Jim Welcome to DWF Sign. I hope that you find us informative I know that I have. I've heard some of the boar down in your area a bit nasty at times. And would love to do the same myself one of these days. Look forward to any questions you may have. I know if I'm unable to answer them that some one on the forum probably can. I gotta hit you up for some pics maybe before and after the mounting of the scope because Post Pics. What a bunch of picture junkies we are here. I love to take pictures myself so I feel right at home.occasion

Now 4 New Members in one day (a DWF record?)!

Welcome aboard, I think you'll like it here. If you could help out our Serial Number Registry project (top of the right sidebar), as an Original Purchaser we could really use your input.

Check out our Other Brands Forum, we like them all. As far as the "little guys" go, I have a Colt Mustang that ROCKS.

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Greetings Jaggman,

Thanks for the great welcome!

No, I don't work for the power company, but I am an electrical engineer.  I work on a lot of big power stuff in the chemical & refining industries.

I'll try to get a pic of the .44 up, but it's nothing special - looks just like any other 8" .44 DW.

I guess besides the DW, some of my more interesting guns are my 6" Colt Python .357, the .45's (an old Combat Commander, a Kahr CW45, and an EAA), my Beretta M84 and SIG P232 in .380, and a new Springfield XDm in .40 S&W.  I have quite a few others, but those are some of my favorites.

Gotta ask you - Do you own a Jag?  I'm a big fan of 'em! Laugh

Anyway, thanks again for the note!  I'll seeya around!

Regards,

Jim

Jim

Welcome Kilowat.  I own an electrical construction firm so I know just what you do I supposeBig Grin.  You draw it we build it.  Glad you joined the DWF Sign.  We will look forward to your Cool Pics once you post them.  As jaggman stated I just was in SC a few weeks back on a deer and hog hunt and took a hog with my 414SM.  Your .44 will do just great.  My scope mount is a drilled and tapped Weigand with a 2.5-8X leupold on top.

KW3,

I do own a Jag, a 1975 XJL straight six.  It is in my garage here for some work, some rust issue on the driver's floor, and vacuum brake assist doesn't work.  Car is a beauty on the outside. No Cool Pics at this time.

Jagmann,

I've got your car's big brother - a '73 XJ12.  Also it's granddaddy and a great uncle - a '52 Mk VII and a '65 S-Type.  All of 'em are in serious need of restoration, but I'll get around to it one of these years!  Are you a member of Jag-Lovers.com?

Look forward to swapping info on the DW's and the cars!

Jim

Hi Guys,

A quick update:

I took my biggest pig to date weekend before last - a 394 pound boar.  NOT with the DW, but with my .30-30.  I saw several nice hogs the evening before my hunt that were in handgun range, so I've really got the itch to try a hog hunt with the .44 DW.

Right now, I've got a cheapo red-dot scope on the DW, and I was thinking I'd wait until I got a good 'real' scope before hunting with it, but after seeing all the hogs I did that weekend, I'm sure I could do fine with the red-dot for now.  I saw a total of six big hogs, all within 30 yards or less, and the 394-pounder I shot with the .30-30 was at less than 20 yards.

As soon as I can get the red-dot sighted in, and get back out there, I'm going to try for a hog.  I'll letcha know how it goes!

Regards,

Jim

We'll be looking forward to some pics of the DW fired hogBig Grin.  I've shot plenty of paper with red dot scopes, but never hunted with one.  What has your experience been hunting with one?

Don't know about anyone else, I like them in well lit area's do not care for them in low light or no light condition's. Red dot seem's to make target darker and harder to see in low light condition's. even with dot's setting's on low.

I've never hunted with one, either.  I've never hunted with a handgun at all.  I've only recently taken up hunting, and only wild hogs.  Four to date, all with my .30-30.

Really have an itch to go after 'em with the .44 though, and after my experience a couple weeks ago (near Pawnee, OK), I'm ready to try it.  Lots of shot opportunities at big pigs at very short range the evening before my hunt (just out for a walk - no gun with me).  I have a couple hundred pounds of wild pork in the freezer, though, so I'd better not take a very big one anytime soon. lol2

I'd sure like to hear from anyone who's got good experience hog hunting with a handgun!

Regards,

Jim

Hey there Kilowatt33:  Welcome aboard. I hunt with handguns for hog, deer, n bear.  I have hunted in Lousiana for the last 5 years. Near Coventington, and closer to Bush LA. I have friends there n hunt with them.  I hunted with a 657 S&W 41mag. for years n it will take all of the game I have found here. I also have a 480 Ruger n a 500 S&W.  I have shot a friends .445 supermag n I must say I am impressed with the preformance and prefer the handling qualities of the DW. I hope DW will return a .445 to their lineup. It would be my main gun. Another friend has a DW .44 mag. and it is very accurate and I really like it. I think you will do fine with the DW .44 on your hog hunts. I prefer hard cast bullets of 270 to 300 gr.  in .44cal. for hogs. However the 300 gr Hornady XTP does very good on hogs, deer and bear. In my .480 I use .325 gr XTP's and in the .500 I use .350 XTP's with excellent results. Best wishes, n Good Hunting!
