Hi all,

I'm a "newb" in a number of ways, but most new to the world of Dan Wessons.  Having fallen in love with my CZ-82, I was familiar with the DW name at the CZ USA website, but not so familiar with the guns.

Then lurking around the "classifieds" section of another general gun forum in my continued quest for the right .357 mag, I came across a DW Model 12.  First time I had ever heard of the interchangeable barrels.  I was really intrigued.  I wanted to get a short barrelled .357 for CCW and a longer one for fun. This idea of interchangeable barrels was really cool.  Plus it fits in with my "loves owning older stuff" side.  (I really dig Toyota FJ40's, GMC Classic Motorhomes, and my 1st Generation iPod Smile)

I grew up around a dad who had guns and encouraged me to shoot, and I enjoyed it.  But during my adult life, until a few months ago, I never owned a gun. Didn't feel I had to. I teach history in middle school and secondary at a Christian private school. I have always spoken well of the 2nd amendment, but I didn't really feel that it applied to me. Plus I had to get over the mistaken idea that Christians shouldn't own firearms. (God will protect you; he who lives by the sword, and all that….)

I am over both misconceptions now, and feel a responsibility to protect my wife and myself rather than just become a victim who shoulda woulda coulda.

When I first approached the Mrs about getting a shotgun for home defense, I was prepared for a battle. I was afraid that she'd be offended that I would bring a (gasp!) firearm into our home. I was wrong! She was totally on board. She even enjoyed going out to the outdoor range and blowing off some steam (and a couple of boxes of cheap Wal-Mart shells.)

At our Valentine's dinner out this past February, she thanked me for becoming so serious

about becoming better informed and prepared for our family's safety. And to think I worried that she'd hate the idea of a gun in the house….

Since then, I've gotten myself a CZ-82 and her a Ruger LCR…but guess what she likes more…Confused.  She's keeping the LCR for CCW, but it looks like I'll need to get my own '82 for myself.  We have yet to take the DW out to shoot, but it won't be long…here's hoping the DW doesn't get commandeered as well.

Anyway, I wanted to follow protocol and introduce myself and my gun.  Look forward to learning more about this beautiful revolver…

Stan

ps. If anyone has any barrels, wrenches or feeler gauges laying around that you'd like to convert to cash, I'd love to hear from you…Big Grin

Hi Stan, sorry it took me so long to welcome you to DWFWink. You hit all the New Guy buttons exactly, nice pics of a nice DW. For barrel wrench and feeler gauge, check the righthand sidebar, our member EWK produces the best wrench I've ever owned, far better than the original DW item.

Porkchop barrels do come available on the auction sites from time to time, here's a 2" on there right now:

http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=189656162

I think there is a 4" on there somewhere too.

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Welcometo theDWF Sign. Lots of knowledgeable guys around here always willing to help out. Also beware, hang around here long and you can contract DWAS. There is no cure just an expensive treatment.

?

I bought it advertised as a Model 12, but let me flash the "newbie" card again. <grin> School me on the difference...

Shows what I know, I didn't even know there was such an animal as an 11. FWIW, it has a 2881X serial number...

11 would be a fixed rear sight, 12 would be an adjustable

Some historical info here:

You've got to wonder how many DW's are wrong in the BATF paperwork.  I can't tell you how many I have bought that had a model # of "357 ctg".

Welcome!

Pretty sure, if yall are enjoying shooting, that the revolver will quickly shine as a favorite. Start with some nice tame .38 target loads to feel it out then drop in a .357 for a bang up good time.

I guess being "from down south" I never equated God OR Guns. its always been God and guns... whats the old movie Sergent York?  Fun old flick, pretty much puts it there. Theres a bit more flexibity in the Model 15-2 than the porkchop models only because there is just so much more variety. That grip may also be limiting. To me the small grips just dont lend enough wrist support nor is there enough to hang on to. A big fat target grip or even the Hogue monogrip adds alot to the shooting.

Or you could have one custom made by LB!

Soap Box, Ballot Box, Ammo Box

in that order.

4 Monson Model 15's

1 Palmer FB 15

1 Rossi 357 Model 92 (lever)

1 CZ 75B

 That was my next question...Thanks!

Ha ha!  Well, I was raised by a European woman who was conservative in her religion, and liberal in her politics.  No wonder I was a mess! lol2 Otherwise, pretty much the same here in Missouri.

Already eyeballin' em....

Welcomeaboard Stan, that was an excellent intro post...and a great looking 'ol Porkchop, too!Laugh

What you've actually got is a Model 14-1, which is a fixed sight service revolver & should have the same action as the later -2 guns (14-2 & 15-2). The flush barrel nut & lower rear fixed sight firmly places it as a 14-1.

The only tricky part to finding extra barrels for your gun will be to make sure they are the flush barrel nut style. You can use an earlier exposed nut style, if you buy barrel & shroud together. The flush barrels are a bit shorter than the exposed barrels.

The 14 front sights are shorter than the 15 sights, so keep that in mind too.

Here's a thread I made a while back that will show the barrel differences between these guns...
