Hi guys!  First of all I'd like to say thanks for putting together such an awesome and informative site.

A couple of years ago a friend let me shoot his model 15-2 with both 6VH and 4VH barrels and I fell in love.  Since then, I've been keeping an eye out for Dan Wessons and finally found one at a gun show yesterday.  It's a 15-2 with a standard 6 inch barrel.  Serial number 22787X, so based on the list posted here, I guess it was made in '79.  For a 30+ year old gun, I think it's in fairly decent condition.  It seems to be mechanically sound.  There's some obvious holster wear, but that's something I expect on used guns.  The one thing that has me a little concerned is it's missing the short sideplate screw.  That's the one between the cylinder and the hammer.  If it worked loose through use, I can handle that.  However, I'm concerned that some weekend gunsmith has opened it up and if he was careless enough to leave out a screw, I'm worried about what he could've done to the internal workings.  Do any of you have thoughts/opinions to share on my delimma?

Thanks in advance,

Lee

Welcome to the DWF Sign.

My thought would be to take off the side plate to see if everything looks OK.  Call Priscilla at DW on Monday and order a new side-plate-screw.  Reassemble and try it out, unloaded, of course to see if everything appears to work correctly.

It it does, go shoot it.

GoodLuck

Hey Lee, Welcome.

The only way you will know if everything is in place as it should be is to take the

grip off , then the side plate and look inside. Here's a tutorial that will help :

Those screws can shoot loose. I just shot a competition ( about 200 rounds) the screw was very loose.

First off, try the Revolver Function Test:

https://www.danwessonforum.com/?page_id=3/revolvers/revolver-checkout-how-to-tell-if-a-particular-specimen-is-any-good/

I would also take off the sideplate for a quick look, clean and lube, and check the cylinder gap.

And Welcome Aboard!

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Wisdom is merely the realization of how little one knows, therefore I am wise.

Thanks for the suggestions and especially Blacktop and Steve for the guides.  I opened it up last night and everything looked good except for the hand spring.  Based on the pictures in the tune up tutorial, it looks like the tip had broken off, which allowed it to fall out of the hole in the transfer bar.  So, I'm going to call up Priscilla and order the sideplate screw and a replacement hand spring.  Would you guys recommend replacing anything else while I'm ordering parts?

Thanks again,

Lee

You're going to need a good wrench, so just order from our local souce here on the DWF -- EWK (Eric).  You'll see a pic on the sidebar for his wrenches.  He may also have the spring and screw for you.

Personally, I'd change all the springs, just get the complete spring kit, probably not much more money and you are paying the same amount for shipping

My 15-2 was missing that screw when I first got it, too. And it looks like the previous owner shot it that way for a while.Confused It functions fine today, other than it's obvious " high mileage wear".

You get the sideplate screw's with Erics spring kit….and alot less than CZ/DW's price.

Here is his gunbroker listing for spring kit.

http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=195142894

Or you can search the hardware stores for a  3-48 X 1/4  screw, just take the

longer/lower one with you to compare.
