Hi folks. I bought a 44 recently. I was looking for a smith in 44 to hunt with, and came across this DW 44, so I thought I would try it. I've been scouring your site and google trying to learn about them as much as possible and trying to find a solution for installing a red dot that clamps on to the VR, I don't want to drill into it, and I want to leave the sights alone to keep my options wide open. Turns out most google searches come right here, so I figured I would join. Thanks for having me!

Welcome to the Forum from Wisconsin. Check eBay they have clamp-on scope rails but they do leave marks on the top rib. You can try and put a shim under the clamp screw.

Welcome to the Forum.Be careful though. I bought one Dan Wesson a few years ago and have since acquired a very bad case of . It has led to a safe with SEVERAL DWs in several calibers with different length BAs to fill out sets. AND a couple of Pistol Packs.
What Steve said is true, I have every caliber expect .22 and many more too boot
Welcome to THE Forum. Steve S, you have a mild case of DWAS😆.
The recoil of a 44 mag may be too much for the 44 mag clamp on mount. The factory recommends D&T. You can acquire another barrel assembly just for the scope or just a shroud. The condition won't matter because when you go to church you can put on the pristine shroud or BA.

Welcome to the forum.
Those ebay clamp on's that Don mentioned look nice for the money, but as he stated they do mark up the shroud and I've seen some pretty deep gouges left by them. Ole Dog brought up a good point as well - the .44 mag recoil may be too much and if you really crank down the screws to keep it tight you risk damaging the shroud rib.
I'd go for drill and tap also. If you remove the base you can plug the holes with a plug made specifically for this, and they look good. I've got a few shrouds here with this type of plug and they look fine. It's called a Positive Stop screw plug. I'd go this route.
Jack Weigand used to make a base specifically made for Dan Wessons - You can write them and see if they have any left hanging around or maybe they'd make a few if you asked them.

One other route is you can still buy the 44 mag barrels on CZ-USA for a great price. Even a 10 inch full lug barrel is available for $433 so if you want to save the original barrel you can buy these CZ barrels and then do a clamp or drill the CZ barrel and use it for your scope hunting and then always put the original back on. I think the 8 inch is only $374 also and that's in blue or stainless both are available on their web site.
