Hey guys I just wanted to introduce myself. I am 22 and I live in Boise idaho and I have been looking to get my first Wheelgun. I have been looking at the Taurus model 44 and a Red Hawk and someone last night said I should check out the Wesson line and I have to say I have never seen a more striking or interesting revolver. I thought the Taurus's with the rubber grips were sexy but damn the finnishes on these guns is superb. I joined up to learn more about these cool and shockingly affordable guns. I did have a couple questions. How do they hand hot loads? I was looking at a .357 if it will run 200 grain doubletap. Also where can you get or how common are the shrouds like wdelac's? Are there any special places to find these guns beside gunbroker? I look forward to learn all about these guns and hopefully getting a couple myself!

These gun have not been made in a long while... HOWEVER.. that is to change and CZ-USA/DW will re-introduce the .357 small frame revolver. Until then yes web sights like GunBroker are your best bet.
DW revolvers were designed for long distance target competiton like IHMSA .. ie they are meant to shoot heavy iron plates at long range. If any gun can take a beating .. then this is it. I dare say they can take much more abuse than any taurus ever hoped to. That said, yes you can destroy these as well.
New shrouds can be had from CZ and used ones from sites such as GunBroker... but we are hopeful that VERY SOON NOW.. our in-house DW parts maker will be making his own barrels and shrouds.. including some very customized ones.
as for grips look to the left sidebar also for our in-house custom grip maker! Why buy "off the rack" when these can be had?
We do warn new DW that DWAS has no cure!
Soap Box, Ballot Box, Ammo Box
in that order.

Dan Wesson revolvers have a well earned reputation for strength and durability. Load safely and and work up loads properly, the same as any other firearm, but I'd expect a DW to outlast a Taurus (or two).
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Dieseldog,
to the . I see Pinetor has already handled most of your questions. The shroud by WDelac that I think you are referring to was a very special edition and only a few were produced. There is one similar to it on GB right now, but I doubt you'll ever find just that shroud by itself.

Not a problem, in fact the 200grn DT load is just a warm load at 640 ft lbs, their 125grn is their hot load at 710 ft lbs . I ran about 1k of Fiocchi 158grn thats at 694ft lbs and has'nt effected my 15 one bit . All has to do with powder and pressure but I have seen .357 mag pushed to almost 800 ft lbs of energy and was still inside SAMMI . You can call Mike at Double Tap and he will tell you he dos'nt push the pessure limit's with any of his loads.

Is there anyone out there making custom shrouds, that could machine me up a shroud like that?
Actually, our in-house machinist has that very thing scheduled on his list of things to do. Click the "EWK Arms" link at the right of this screen, for goodies he's already making & stick around the for updates on his shrouds.
Oh & aboard!

Once again thanks for the friendly words! I guess what I am debating right now is whether a 357 would cover my need or if I need to pick up a .44 mag thats why I as about the higher pressure loads. I camp and hike in a area where Bear and cougar (even wolf) encounters are fairly common, we almost always have at least one hiker attacked by a black bear every year. I preffer a shotgun when I am camping but for hiking I really want a carry gun that is going to take care of buisness. Any thoughts or opinions?

IMO 44 at a minimum for bear and 445 SM would be better, but then you would be packing a lot of weight.
Welcome to the forum, my battle buddy was the PMS at BSU for the last few years and he's mentioned the same issues w/ black bears.
Whatever you decide remember- its no good if you don't take it with you, so you'll need to add some good leather to your shopping list as well...
