Hello. I'm a new member from Pittsburgh. I have owned a few semi-automatic pistols, but I always end up trading them for revolvers. I shot my first deer with a 4" S&W model 66 back in 2011. I was carrying it just because I could, but I was in a position where I couldn't turn around and shoot the deer with my rifle. I've been looking at larger revolvers more suitable to handgun hunting ever since, but I'm not enamored with any of the calibers that are more expensive to shoot than the 357.

I saw a 357 supermag for the first time on armslist a few months ago and I've been reading as much as possible on here and elsewhere about them ever since. I think I would really enjoy the versatility of being able to shoot cheap 38s at the range and 357 max for hunting. I almost bit on the revolver that was for sale, but it was a blued (and purpled) gun. It turns out I'm addicted to stainless steel. I'm now on the lookout for a model 740. I'm not in a rush as I have to save my pennies and convince my bride that it's a good investment.

Can anyone tell me approximately how often a model 740 will become available on sites like gunbroker? Are there any other sites you can recommend watching for these elusive guns?

Anyway, I appreciate all the information yinz guys have compiled here, and I'm looking forward to becoming a Dan Wesson owner someday.

Welcome from the other side of PA!  Thanks for stopping by and introducing yourself.  740's show up on Gunbroker quite often, there was one up just a week or two ago.  Stainless guns usually fetch more money so be aware of that.  Also, if you plan to shoot 'short' rounds out of a SM, be sure to scrub out the chambers after shooting them as a carbon ring can form in the chamber making subsequent insertion of full length SM rounds difficult.  Keep your eyes on the various gun auction sites, Gunbroker, gunsAmerica etc and you will see a 740 come up soon I'll bet.

Post some pics if/when you get one.

BTW, another gun to consider would be 7445 supermag, it is basically a 44 magnum, magnum and uses the same bullets as 44 mag thus keeping costs down.  445's come up fairly regularly on GB too, but usually at a higher price point than the 740's.

Anything worth doing is worth doing well.

Welcome from Wisconsin!  I just sold a Model 40 Stainless on GB last week, SM's are fun guns to shoot.  I still have one Model 40 with multiple barrels both six and eight inch to play with.  Not cheap to shoot though the best price I found for ammo is about 1.00 per round, you may get cost down if your are a re-loader.  WELCOME, and good luck on your search!

That's the first one I ever saw, and I've been researching them ever since. I wish I had known what a deal that was at the time.

Well, it only took me 8 months to find my supermag! A front sight is on order. I don't think I'm a fan of the scope. I'm sure I'll start to be a little more active on here as I start using and learning about this beast.

Glad to see you found what you were seeking. Nice looking set-up. Now we need a range report!

I'm working on selling some of the extras that came with it so I can order some 357 Max components, haha. Then I'll need to do a range report.

I'm actually in Carnegie. I am a member of the Coraopolis District Sportsman's Association, so I'll probably be trying this out at one of the ranges there. Where do you shoot around here?

The scope may come handy for those 100 yard shots. Or 200 yds. The 357 maximum cartridge is a hoot. The blast from the cylinder gap will rock the folks behind you. You may need ear protection while hunting. Lol

I used to have a yearly membership at Anthony Arms, it expired in July. I doubt that I'll be renewing it anytime soon. I needed cash and have sold all but one "large" caliber handgun I owned. I've got two .22 handguns and a DW .357 left. Plus a Ruger 10/22 (which I could use at the AA indoor range).

That is a nice find - congrats.  When you pop that Burris mount off, it's going to leave some scuff marks in the matte finish on the vent rib.  No problem though - you can mask it off and bead blast it just like new again.  If you need any help with it just let me know.

Thanks for the offer! What do you like to use for masking? I have been using regular making tape, but it seems like beads always find a way around it and into all the nooks and crannies of my guns.
