With my first post I will introduce myself as Bret from Hoover, AL. My cousin received a Dan Wesson 744V as a Christmas present from his boss in about 1986 and I have wanted one ever since. I'm still looking by the way. I have missed a few auctions recently on gunbroker.com...one certainly that I wish I had to do all over again...but I continue to look & believe I will have one within a couple months.
The more I read about these guns, the more I like.
One quick question about the 744Vs is: if I were to acquire one that does not have the original grips, how difficult is it to get new grips that are similar? From my perusing the site before I joined, it seems that one of the more frequent posters here is involved with the LB Customer Grips that advertises on the forum. Could I get grips similar to the original in the walnut (is the 'DW' available?) to replace Hogue grips?
Really looking forward to hanging around here & learning more & more.
Thanks,
Bret

Welcome to the Forum.
Factory original DW grips are very readily available on eBay and Gun Broker. The LB grips are certainly a step up in terms of the availability of wood choices and profile/type.
LB is a longtime Member/Site Supporter/Moderator here and I have several of his grips, each of which has been excellent. The biggest issue with LB grips is actually getting one, it is a part time hobby of his, and the backlog can be a little long sometimes.
I owned a 744 6VH for several years and .44 Mag is just not for me. The 744 was a great gun, but a bigger, heavier gun than I like to shoot
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Welcome to the forum from PA.
Prices can really vary on Dan Wessons but I will give you my personal opinion based on my observations of the market lately. Keeping in mind all gun sales are going like crazy right now. For just a 744 without any extra barrels etc I would say $500 is a real good price, $800 is real top dollar, for a nice condition piece. Keep in mind you are looking at 25 year old guns so condition can vary, buyer beware. I wouldnt be concerned about grips, like the guys said they turn up on Gb and Ebay if you want originals.

That's good feedback, thank you. I let an auction go on gb for $620 that I could kick myself over. None since then have been under $900. To be fair, now that you mention it, most or all of those have had extra barrels. I don't have to steal anything, I just don't want to get raked over the coals.
Looking at a couple right now.....maybe I'll have mine in the next couple weeks!!!

Bret, just so you know, we can help youWe can help you buy more DW's than any sane person should.
Yes, we can- and I resemble that remark....
Well, the "Poster Child" of DWAS has been heard from
