Hey, all!
I'm new to this forum but not to DW or firearms. Just picked up a new (to me) blued DW 44 VH 6″. Should be a great deer, hog and varmint gun. Looks to be in good condition and it's a Monson gun. Got it for $410.00. Hopefully I didn't do too bad. Lookin' forward to pickin her up in a couple days. I'm also in the market for some Hogue grips and a barrel wrench. Hopefully I don't have to pay DW's $43.00 price for the wrench. Maybe I can find one around somewhere.
Also, I have a question. My serial number begins with a "B". Most I've seen don't have any letters or have "BS" (I think). Does anyone know what that means?
Let me know what you think! Here's a few of the auction pics....

Welcome to the group, glad to have ya. The 44 looks pretty good and $410 is not a bad price in today's market. The serial number thing is a mystery we have been working on and have a long way to go to sort out, but maybe one of the guys can shed some light on the B thing. A barrel wrench can be picked up on any of the auction sites and sometimes even here in the classified section. When you get her, we will need a range report and more pics.

nicke 10mm to the land of the Dans. Great looking DW you have there. I agree that $410.00 was not bad at all. You may check ebay and Gunbroker for wrench kits. I know there are many variations on ebay at times. My blued 44 has a "B" on the serial number too. It may stand for blued as I have stainless guns that have an "S" in their number

aboard!
I'm with these guys, you did good on the price for that one. In one of those shots, it looks like there's a little "Barney" action going on, but I bet when you get it in your hands, it's hardly noticeable. The flash tends to exaggerate the condition.
Here's my take on the "B" in your serial number...

Hey thanks for all of the responses, guys! I've been reading them all as they come in but my cell phone browser doesn't like the web format so I couldn't respond until now (via my PC). You understand!
I just got back from my FFL, background check done and everything faxed away. Should have my baby on Thursday in time for me to take it to the lake (visiting pops this weekend). It's gonna be a perfect time to shoot it. I'm concerned that I won't be able to remove and clean the barrel and re-gap it and everything since I don't have the wrench. Oh well. If I can get a credit card between the cylinder and the barrel I won't shoot it, otherwise, I think I'll go for it. 🙂 I'm just glad my DW Razorback will have another of it's kind to keep it company on lonely nights. 😉
As for the serial number thing.... I like the work you've done but mine is a Monson gun with only a B.... so maybe it was right before they sold to Palmer. Who knows.
As for the Barney action.... I'm not too worried. From what I've been reading, that color is typical of DW (although NOT so much with other blue-ing examples). Plus, I love the color purple. LOL.
Well, I'm off to bed.... Thanks again!

I agree, the letters were introduced later on in the Monson years. The "only a B" part would be correct for your blued gun, as an "SB" would denote a stainless model.
If your barrel gap is visibly huge, you may want to hold off for a wrench like you're saying...otherwise, go burn some powder!

Nick-
Welcome to the Nuthouse. I agree that you did well on price, and that you should keep tou eyes open for a barrel tool. A seller on Gunbroker that goes by EGK has a decent new manufacture barrel wrench that frequently goes for around $20.
Now for the important stuff- Another 1911 guy
Let's get some photo's and impressions, it's a 10mm? Once I begin reloading I want a 10mm, and DW is the name in 10mm
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

nick E, from my home town of St. Louis! I was born at Scott AFB, just across the river. Nice score on that .44 DW, and the little "barney" effect just adds character. I'm looking for a DW brass-flinger myself, either .45ACP or 10mm. The 10mm is a great cartridge, and it works very well in my "other brand-name" semi-auto. Let's see some pics of yours also.

Hey all,
Just to update you all.... I got back tonight from the lake where I did quite a bit of shooting, especially with the new 44VH. 🙂
First thing is.... this is easily the nicest looking, slickest, most accurate .44 I've ever shot-- and it's MINE! Woo hoo!!!
Here are a few more snaps of my DW and also a couple of snaps with my DW alongside my Dad's Colt Anaconda. I've got pics of some groups I shot at 25 yards but don't have them with me now. Either way, enjoy!

HEY CHARGER FAN, LOL!! MY DAD, IN FACT, WAS SURPRISED AT THE ACCURACY OF MY NEW DW, ALTHOUGH HE CEDED TO MY SUPERIOR ACCURACY SKILLS LONG AGO HAHAHA!! JOLDY, I SURE ALSO LIKE THE COLT ANACONDA, AS WELL ALTHOUGH WE BOTH KNOW THE DW IS A FAR NICER GUN.... AT LEAST IN MY OPINION.

Most Anaconda's that I see in my area are $900+, and my 744 6VH was $550. I've never shot an Anaconda, but I can't imagine it being enough better than my DW to want to pay the difference.
Nice job on getting us some pix.

I wonder if hotbluer has a partner named hotgreener.
OK, OK, I'll consider it beaten to death.

LOL yep.... the forum format doesn't like my phone browser at all. Not much I can do about it, though.
Here we go.... finally got a quick snap of my first 25 yard target .... its a Shoot N See target I get up at 27 long paces that I shot at using a four wheeler as a bench. It was about 50 degrees out, 15-20mph wind and barrrely sprinkling. A nice fall afternoon. Was shooting Rem UMC 240gr SP's. The target is me "walking" in the shots and adjusting the sights from whereever the last owner had them.....wayyyy low and off to left. The target AFTER this one (not shown) is where I finally got it zeroed.
Also, in the picture, you might notice that my grips are a bit different than what came on the gun when I purchased. I went ahead and ordered the Hogue grips off of Ebay. Just got them today and installed. MUCH better and way cooler looking.
Enjoy
