Mike, Welcome to the DWF Sign!  You came to the right place if you are looking for Dan Wesson chatter.  Well try to get you hooked on owning not one, but a fleet of them if you hang around here.  Most of us are afflicted by something called DWAS , see acronyms to the rightLaugh.  I think you shouild be able to find a Dan in 44 without too much difficulty on the gun auction sites.  To find them locally is a bit more challenging, but more rewarding when you do.  I have one PA deer with a 445SM so far.  One with a 44Mag too, but it was the other Wesson, shhhh.  Glad you joined us, ask lots of questions and there should be enough posts here to read for an evening or twoLaugh

Welcome Mike! You came to the right place to talk about Dan Wessons. You'll find yours, once you get it, to be more accurate than the others you mentioned, and more pleasant to shoot.

You may post your e-mail if you wish. I suggest that you put a Want To Buy in our Classifieds, and Gun Broker almost always has at least one 744 running.

GoodLuck we're pulling for you

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Collectors is overplaying the "scarcity" of a 744 8VH a little.

California makes it harder, just from what I see on GB

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Welcome

The asking price for this 744 is a little high, but I'm sure they will consider offers.

the price is not that bad, took a look at 744 , just what i had in mind, looks like alot of rounds went through it ,or it was not cleaned proper,I know I always had to brake in the barrels on my fixed six shooters,I suppose it wouldnt matter so much on the DW since the barrel could be changed out. I also would look at the firing pin hole to see if the telling black ring is there also indicating many rounds.does any one have any thoughts on this,or is this not a problem for accuracy in the DWConfused

Well Mike, let me add my welcome.  You're going to love this site.  You're right about the price of that 744.  Not teriffic but reasonable for a gun in good shape.  A 445S (7445) is a little tougher to find at a good price but they do show up on gunbroker from time to time.

Living in the PR of CA may cause you some additional hassles.  A lot of the listings on GB specify no shipping to CA.

GoodLuck

If you haven't already seen it, this is important:

https://www.danwessonforum.com/?page_id=3/revolvers/revolver-checkout-how-to-tell-if-a-particular-specimen-is-any-good/

A good used revolver checkout that I always use, and I would certainly check the items you mentioned. If a 744 passes all these tests, and looks good, it should be good to go. One of the most common fixes on Dan Wessons (any older revolver for that matter) is a thorough cleaning and new springs.

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Collectors in Houston is a very established shop with a good reputation. My guess is that they will accurately report the condition of anything they sell.

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Collector's is about 6 miles from my home, so I get by there on a regular basis.  The place is amazing with the largest selection of firearms I have ever seen (their radio ad claims "over 10,000 firearms in stock").  I could spend days in there looking around poke

It would take a multi million dollar lottery winner to buy this gun from Collector's:
