I recently started collecting interesting Dan Wesson pistols and won an auction for a new old stock never fired or transferred Dan Wesson 744 pistol kit.  The interesting thing about this is the seriel number BF001.  Does anyone know any background on the seriel number?  The seller (a gun dealer in Norwich NY) claimed it was one of three, and that he bought it direct from Dan Wesson at a gun show pre-CZ acquistion.  Any info greatly appreciated.

I saw that auction. I think I even bid on it in the beginning. Fabulous set. Congratulations. I needed another like I need another hole in my head but I am glad it went to a good home. I have no reason to question the sellers representation of one of three sets. The gun itself is not unusual but the 3 BAs together in a set are. Of one thing you can be certain. There will be no more made.

Well this purchase has turned into a newfound Dan Wesson revolver addiction.  I ended up purchasing a used but in very fine condition Dan Wesson 44 from the 80's so that I can actually shoot it (I don't want to fire the BF001, keeping it in like new condition).  Then, I figured I might as well bid on another New Old Stock 715 three barrel kit from the post CZ era.  I find myself searching for barrels of different sizes now, wanting to get them all!  When will it all end?  What did I get myself into?

One thing I can agree with you Ole Dog, is that there won't be any more made.  I really like this fact about Dan Wesson revolvers and think it is worth collecting more, I guess the value can only go in one direction over time.

And now, a new forum to browse!  Thanks for the kind welcome Ole Dog and DA...64

That is a beauty of a 44 you picked up.  I am a bad 'collector', because I use every item for its intended purpose; pipes get smoked, guns get shot.  I don't buy what won't get used; guns that don't get fired (not my fav), get sold.  Lol.

dwf-welcome to the dwf

When ordering directly from the factory, one option was a custom serial number specified by the customer, which this could be one.

"I find myself searching for barrels of different sizes now, wanting to get them all!  When will it all end?  What did I get myself into?"

This condition is known asdwas "Dan Wesson Acquisition Syndrome".big-grin

Congrats on landing that one, that's a great looking set. I agree with Stinger, the serial number was likely a custom one ordered by the original owner. If the seller is right about purchasing it directly from DW, sounds like the guy who made the order may have never followed through & picked it up when it was finished.

Anyway,dwf-welcome to thedwf

Well if it was indeed custom ordered SN#, then the ordering party must of defaulted.  The claim from the dealer that sold it was that it was acquired at a gun show by the dealer from Dan Wesson themselves in early 2000's.  I guess I will never know the full story!
