Hi All
I just joined the forum. Hope to get some DW revolver info from you folks.
I'm retired, living in eastern MT, have my own shooting range behind the shop.
7, 25, 50, 75, 100, and 200 yard targets keep me busy.
NRA Life Member since the early 80's and Endowment Member for 4 years.
Recently became addicted to the 357 (Supermag) Maximum cartridge and shoot it in Thompson Encore, Thompson Contender, and Savage Model 24. Recently saw a DW Model 40 on GunBroker and couldn't live without it. What a fine firearm! 6", VH, blue, like new condition.
Just killed 2 deer with the Encore and 1 with the Contender, hope to try the DW 40 next year.
Question: Do all DW 357 barrels and shrouds interchange amongst the frames or are they frame specific?? Will a Model 15 357 barrel and shroud fit the Model 40?
I posed the question to CZ and never got a response.
Keep Shooting!

Hi NRARay,
to the
Congratulations on a fine Dan Wesson purchase. The .357 SM, model 40 is based on the large frame Dan Wesson. The .357 Mag, model 15-2 is a small frame Dan Wesson. The barrels and shrouds will not interchange.
My understanding is each caliber have their own thread pitch on the barrels and frames. The shrouds will interchange on each frame size. The SuperMag shrouds will fit all the large frame revolvers but the model 41, 44 and 45 shrouds will not fit the SuperMag frames.

Welcome NRARay:
Steve hit the nail on the head. The reason that 41, 44, and 45 shrouds will not fit on supermags is that since the SM cylinder is longer, so is the ejector rod, and the ejector rod slot on the regular caliber shrouds is too short for the SM ejector.
Sounds to me like DWAS is just about to bite you.

Actually, Wayne hit that nail. When it comes to SuperMags, Steve is clueless, and only knows what you guys tell him.
Welcome Ray, sounds like you picked up a Model 40 that I was watching on GB, and just couldn't afford. Was that the one with the doorknob barrel wrench?
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Thanks all for the information.
I suspected the barrels would not interchange, but wanted to confirm before I did go crazy on GB.
Steve, this is the one I bought: I don't think it was the one you were looking at.

I had been looking at a 740-VH8 but I'm glad I went with the 40-VH6. It's a BIG gun!
If anyone has a recommendation for pachmayr grips, with finger grooves, that fit the 40, let me know.

aboard, glad to have ya!
Looks like you got yourself a real beauty there, congrats. Regarding finger groove grips, I'm with these guys...haven't seen any from Pachmayr. However, Hogue makes some real nice finger groove grips in both wood & rubber.
Here's a barrel comparison I made a while back, regarding the small/large frame barrel differences. This should make it pretty clear why the Model 15 & 40 assemblies won't interchange.

to NRARay! Sounds like you have a great home range setup there, and you picked up a fine Model 40. I have a nickel-plated 40-VH6, and it is a great gun! The .357 SuperMag is one of my favorites, but I have all of them in both revolvers and single-shots. Each is a joy to shoot.
Hogue makes nice finger-groove grips, as stated. Some of mine wear the older Dan Wesson combat grips, like this on my 740-VH8. It is very comfortable to shoot.

NRARay- I have seen that one, and I love the grips on it. Not the one I was thinking of, and I'm planning on getting a Model 40 6" as well (someday).
A real beauty, Congratulations

Thanks Steve and thanks to all that have commented.
I'M REAL IMPRESSED with the DWF. The feedback and answers are quick and correct.
Much better than some other forums.
I'm considering a VH8 barrel at some time in the future but I really like the way
this one shoots.

DWF "Commercial":
It's really different here than most other Shooting Forums. We've had only one real troublesome member/visitor. It's really a "self moderated" forum with great Members.
Everyone here just helps out, and even our most experienced Members regularly learn new stuff.

NRA Ray,
A belated to the great and powerful . Nice looking Supermag you just bought. I too enjoy the 357 SM alot. A great caliber. I do not have a VH6" but a standard 6" vented and 8" as well. They shoot great and handle well. You should enjoy it alot. Glad to see another deeply rooted NRA member. I recently upgraded to a benefactor member to continue the fight to preserve our firearms rights. Congratulations on your endowment membership!
