hey yall. im a georgia boy with an arsenal but never owned a dan wesson. im a sucker for cannons like this 357 max and had to have it. i found it in a local pawn shop and no body seemed to know much about it. all i know about it is it weighs as much as a youth model shotgun and has the smoothest action i have ever felt. it is a super mag with original blueing and wood grips. i havent been able to find much info on this cannon and dont even know the model. if anyone can shed some light on me it would be much appretiated.
thanks, justin

Welcome to DWF
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

I like that subject title...
Welcome! Well now LB has company... I have to find someone else from MS with a DW to join....
I always drool over the .357 Max, its just plain sexy, all showing its barrel and all.

thanks for the warm welcome guys but i've got a few questions. how can you all tell its a model 40 by the small amount of info i gave you. the gun is in what i would call poor condition and the only markings on it are the serial numbers with the manufacturer city and state, the caliber, and the supermag logo in the barrell. i will post some pics of the mis treated version of my new found glory asap. i am however thinking of hunting whitetails with it as i am an avid woodsmen and i am looking forward to the challenge.

A blue .357 Max is a DW Model 40. This may help figure out the many models:

How mistreated is it? If we're talking bluing, it's an easy fix:

Just keep poking around here, and you'll be up to speed in no time.

Yep, what Steve said…basically, a blued Dan Wesson .357 Maxie is a Model 40…
(sorry, I couldn't refrain any longer from posting pics in this thread )
The .357 Maximum was the first of four DW SuperMags from the "father of the SuperMags", Elgin Gates. This first SuperMag was named the Model 40 because it's sole purpose was to give the DW .357 Maximum owner a perfect "40" score in IHMSA competition…as long as he could shoot straight.
Most of the other DW model numbers were related to their caliber, .44 Mag is a Model 44 (744 in stainless), .45 Colt is a Model 45 (745 in stainless), etc.
And so, a model 740 is merely a stainless version of the blued gun.
