This time in South Florida.
We as a society need to determine what is driving kids to do these evil things. Apparently this kid also had interests in bombs as well.
When I was in high school in the late 70's and early 80's things like this NEVER happened anywhere. Sure there were fights, and bullying took place but nobody ever killed anybody or did a mass murder.
We even kept our guns in our cars so we could go small game hunting on our way home from school, so the firearms were probably more handy than they are today, yet nobody ever used one in anger, what changed?

I believe that a big part of this is the need for instant "Celebrity/Notoriety". If you are not AMAZING you are nothing.
Reality TV, Social Media, Instant Messaging... all feed the frenzy for unhealthy people to make their mark.
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

I was listening to a discussion on the radio a couple days ago, and they hit on your same opinion. In the 70's & 80's, for example, if a shooting happened, it wasn't instant news like it is today. There was no internet, so for a kid to hear of a school shooting, that kid would have to search out the news by reading newspapers, or watching a nightly TV broadcast. I don't know about you guys, but when I was a teen, the chance of me taking interest in reading a newspaper (other than the funnies) was very little. I watched the TV news more often, but if I happened to leave the room to take a leak, the story was over & done by the time I got back, and I missed it entirely.
These days it's almost impossible to NOT hear about shootings (or other bad stories), because it's coming at us from absolutely everywhere, 24 hours a day! Not only that, but today's media chooses to sensationalize it by immediately plastering the shooters face up, his whole history, what he had for breakfast, when he last took a crap...etc. And suddenly he is instantly famous, not invisible as he was before.
The only way I see this turning around is if the media decided to NOT give out the name of the shooter, no photos, no info on him at all other than maybe an age & gender. But that will never happen in a million years, so here we are.

The media gives these kids instant fame and attention, many times just what they crave. A nobody is now somebody will never forget. I agree with CF, don't publish their name. Also, I think a mandatory death sentence should be carried out on anyone who commits a mass murder, regardless of weapon used. Perhaps that would help deter future happenings. I think until we get discipline back at home and in the class room, we will not hear the end of these kinds of crimes. Banning weapons won't stop it, only shift the weapon(s) used. Also, there needs to be better methods to exclude violent individuals from gaining access to the school building, once they are inside, all you can do is react by hiding, not a good strategy. Metal detectors operated by uniformed, armed guards at control points to the building would help, just like in every courthouse here in PA. Also, more armed security guards and/or teachers to cover the buildings. The FL school had several thousand students and ONE guard. The coverage ratio is too high, it would have been a miracle if the guard had been anywhere near the shooter during his rampage.
Anything worth doing is worth doing well.

No one blame the bomb when a bomber commits mass murder or blame the truck when a terrorist plows into crowds. It is always the firearm that millions own but do not commit mass murder with. I think that the FBI individual or individuals that failed to act on the tip are guilty of negligent homicide at the very least. A special prosecutor needs to be appointed to discover who at the FBI is culpable AND WHY.

The latest on tonight's drive by of the "News" networks is referring to this tragedy as the "Valentine's Day Massacre".
Sure, let's give it catchy nickname that hearkens back to the Capone era of gangster shootouts. Lots of graphic, gory shootouts, blazing machine guns, rampant violence and lawlessness. Sounds like responsible reporting to me.
Also, the endless laser focus on the "AR-15 Assault Rifle" completely (maybe fortunately?) misses many other rifles with exactly the same function/capability. Would this school shooting have turned out differently if the MENTALLY ILL criminal had used a .22 rimfire rifle? Springfield .30-06? Over/Under Skeet gun? TC Contender? How quickly CAN a skilled shooter repeatedly load and fire a muzzleloader ???
Bad days coming for shooting sports. None of the knee jerk reaction things that people are screaming for will make a bit of difference about mental illness or keeping schools, shopping malls, movie theaters, churches, music venues, ... safer.
Someone please refresh my memory. What firearm was responsible for the loss of 2,996 lives on September 11, 2001? Good News is, my supply of "pre-ban" box cutters is holding up pretty well.
And BTW, that whole Prohibition (banning of alcohol) worked out exactly as planned, eh?
No regulation, law, or rule ever changed insanity, hatred or stupidity.
Thanks for enduring the rant. I wish I felt better after venting, but I don't.

Sorry you didn't feel better, Steve...but it was a damn good rant.
I have wondered if the Israelis have the best idea...everyone serves a hitch in the military. That way everyone gets a taste of following orders, putting their ass on the line for something, receiving weapons training (as opposed to fantasy games), and (perhaps most importantly) learning to live and work together with folks who are different from themselves.
Something else that might help...every, and I mean EVERY, crime committed with a firearm draws a mandatory prison sentence.
Ahh, well...old men like to dream.

I am reminded of something from several years ago. The daughter of very close friends went on a trip to the Holy Land the summer after her high school graduation. One observation she made was that it took them all several days to get used to people shopping, walking on the sidewalk, sitting in restaurants ... with a submachine gun slung over the shoulder. Israeli soldiers, men and WOMEN!

The anti gun crowd has abetted the murders by creating gun free zones at schools. There is no softer target. If teachers and administrators were required to get training and carry a gun on their hip the problem would be completely eliminated. Concealed carry by a few teachers would not do the job. The problem of liberal, commie, pinko, progressive, America hating, history altering teachers brainwashing our kids would be solved too. I love solving two problems with one solution😁.
