Sure, but he didn't even leave the building before U.S. Rep. Steve Israel (D-N.Y.) announced that he intends to introduce legislation to “extend the definition of armor-piercing ammunition to include all bullets that can pierce body armor and be used in handguns.”   And even before that, U.S. Representative Eliot Engel (D-N.Y.) introduced H.R. 1358, a bill designed to ban civilian use and possession of M855 ammunition.

Don't believe this is a dead issue....

Don't believe this was because he overstepped in any way either. Far more likely he's getting dinged for letting the cat out of the bag early.

OK, I'm not a huge AR guy so somebody tell me which 'handgun' exactly can fire the M855 round?  Would said gun have the barrel length to allow the bullet sufficient velocity to penetrate said armor?

Just one example...

They got AK 47 pistols too

Pretty much any AR lower can be converted to be a pistol.  I have also seen an oversized  derringer type pistol that chambers .223 (God only knows why).

You Can't Fix Stupid!

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

This won't be just about the 5.56mm- think any rifle round that can penetrate armor (nearly all at rifle velocity) which can or is chambered in a pistol such as a Thompson Center Contender or Encore. i.e. .243 WIN, 30-06, 308 WIN.. you see where this is going????

Everyone needs to understand that .223 is only the "Camels Nose" under the tent.

Once any type of .223/5.56 is banned, the nose is inside the door, and the door will be WIDE OPEN

Unfortunately, my local Congressional representation is screaming, lace panty Liberal/Socialist. They buy their votes with give aways  to immigrants and clueless bottom feeders, and disregard/reject people that actually WORK to make America thrive and grow

Rant Over, please forgive me

Steve, you said nothing we all don't think. You are so right about the camels nose. Mr Callan is right also. The director got fired foe screwing up the ban,  not because of the ban. 1 yr and 10 months and we can have our country back. If Hillary wins and conservatives on the Supreme Court retire, this country will cease to be the land of the free  and the home of the brave  .Make sure everyone you know is registered to vote. Don't  take it for granted. Take them to the polls .

T/C contender.

Remington XP100

Many AR type receivers set up as a pistol.

Agree with you Steve, if a ban on .223/5.56 ammo happens, all rifle ammo will be fair game, it would set a bad precedent.

If I read "extend the definition of armor-piercing ammunition to include all bullets that can pierce body armor and be used in handguns." correctly, any revolver/pistol/rifle ammunition that can be shown to pierce body armor and be chambered in a handgun (like a Contender) would be banned, not just .223/5.56.
