When you read this, you will get feel for how far the BS has gone in CT
A guy who was wearing his Halloween costume on "not Halloween" triggered a campus shutdown and two SWAT teams.
Also in today's news is the suggestion that TSA should be armed?
http://www.csmonitor.com/USA/2013/1104/LAX-shooting-Should-TSA-officers-be-armed
I fly very rarely, but I have NEVER seen anyone involved with TSA that I think should be trusted with a weapon in the airport, and I have seen some that I sincerely hope take the bus to work.
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Charged with "breach of peace"...that's one I haven't heard of before.
Stories like this just show how hyper fearful people have become lately. Somehow, this has got to stop & rational common sense must prevail. The knee-jerk reaction over a situation like this has gotten to the point where it's comical.

Those who called the police should be the ones who are charged with breach of peace, everything was fine until they raised the alarm. Hell, I wear an orange shirt and camo pants most every weekend from Nov to Dec and have never caused an alarm at a gas station or convenient store...

In the interest of fairness and full disclosure, I had a conversation today with a CT State Police Sergeant who responded to this incident. This moron was in camo, carrying a fake sword and a very realistic replica handgun. He partied for a couple of days at UConn, and had no other clothes to wear.

10 years ago, the fake sword in his get-up probably would have neutralized the whole matter as something to laugh at. But these days with everyone on edge, I concede that not many will get the humor in it.
Terrorism is front & center these days & looking at the score card, terrorists are winning.
I know that at 21, I still had my "young & dumb" moments, but at least in my situation I already had a young family to think about, so that reigned in much of what could have turned into total stupidity. Looking back,I bet he wishes he would have contacted his dad, the geography Professor to say he was coming on campus.
I bet next year his costume is something entirely more "knee-jerk-neutral".

Remember a costume party in my teens where a girl drove up in camo with a very real S&W 29 in a shoulder rig. As the beer was starting to flow I asked her if it was loaded. She didn't know or know how to check! After we verified it was empty and she didn't have any ammo the party resumed and no one thought any more of it. Different times for sure!

Back in high school, about 1980, a guy in my class gave a demonstration speech for speechcom class where he demonstrated how to clean and reassemble his S&W 44 magnum. He brought the gun to school in the AM and left it in the office. At classs time he retrieved the gun, took it to class and did the demo and returned it to the office. He got a A on the speech, everyone in the class was envious that he had a 44mag (Dirty Harry was very big then) and that was it. Imagine trying that today?
Most guys had a gun rack in thier pickup with a 12ga and a 22 in them because they were going hunting on the way home after school.

Back in the mid-sixties, when my brother and I, and other kids in the neighborhood, were playing "War" over many back yards, we used a WWII "brought home" 7.7 Arisaka rifle as one of our toys. Not a de-milled piece, my son has it now and reloads for and shoots it sometimes.
I guess we were early "gang bangers"?

Interesting you mentioned the Arisaka Steve, a friend of mine just got one that was a war trophy in operational condition. Gun still has all the Chrysanthemum markings indicating property of the emperor. He wants to shoot it but doesn't have much brass or any dies. Do you have any ideas on either of those items?

The one Uncle Bob brought back from WW II also has the Chrysanthemum intact. My son has purchased ammo for this rifle and reloads to shoot it.

I didn't research much beyond this, but Graf's is also a good place for hard to find stuff
BTW-in the interest of true reporting, it's unlikely that Uncle Bob captured this rifle. Much more likely that he traded some beer for it

I can confirm Steve's acquisition theory. Uncle Bob was a flight engineer on B29s. One time while I was playing beer fetcher on a warm summer evening, Dad (B25s. B17s, B24s and the AAC version of the PBY) and uncle Bob were siting in the breezeway talking airplanes. Not war stories exactly, more about their planes.
I asked Uncle Bob about the Arisaka. He told me he traded a Marine a case of beer for it on Iwo Jima. Seems that from time to time (when they were loaded up with beer and whiskey) they would experience "mechanical difficulty" on the way back from a bombing mission and have to set down on Iwo Jima for "repairs" before continuing on to Tinian. Seems they had a pretty lively trade business going on. Beer and liquor for the front line troops.....war souvenirs for the service troops in the rear.
Since Uncle Bob ultimately became a pretty successful Chevy salesman, I'm inclined to believe his story.
, indeed!
My one major disappointment is that I was never able to pry the bayonet away from him!
