In the same way that 9/11 is the benchmark in OUR contemporary history, Pearl Harbor was the defining event for my parents and their families. A number of years ago we vacationed in Hawaii, and as we visited the museums and memorials the enormity of that event really came home to me.
My brother-in-law took us to visit Ft. Shafter, and pointed out the scars and pockmarks on buildings from the strafing attacks that day that have never been repaired, but left as a reminder/memorial.
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.
