One of the things I am committing to in the New Year is to be more active in securing our Second Amendment rights. Among the things I will do:

1) Continue to support the NRA. While I do not agree with all positions of the NRA, I don't see any other National organization established enough to speak loudly and consistently.

2) Join the Connecticut Citizens Defense League (CCDL). Although CCDL is very heavily Open Carry oriented, and I'm not an OC type, they are becoming the most visible and active state group.

3) Introduce new shooters. When people discover I am a handgun shooter, they frequently comment that they have never fired a handgun. Operating on the premise that people fear what they don't know, I want to help people know that handguns have recreational purposes. I plan to invite a non-shooter join me each month at my local club for a "Fun Day" of .22lr shooting fun. I hope that demonstrating careful handgun safety along with some pretty non-threatening shooting fun and success will help folks be more open minded.

4) Monitor my local and national elected representatives positions and actions on Second Amendment rights, and clearly let them know what I expect, in spite of what I believe their personal positions to be.

I've been spending too much time on the sidelines on this.

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

I applaud you for taking a new approach for the New Year.

I want to commit to being more involve in my states politics to do my part in getting Wisconsinites or Concealed Weapons Permit passed.

I also want to help our local mayor to see what the Mayors Against Gun's is all about to see if I can get him to see the truth behind their motivations.

And as always do as much shooting as possible.

   HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!!!!

I'm going to start with the basics & obtain my conceal carry permit this year. I've definitely put that off too long.

From there, I plan to be more active in our Citizen's Defense League...I'm a member, but haven't been to any meetings.Embarassed

I absolutely agree with Steve on this one!  We must all be diligent, active, and proactive in the shooting sports as well as protecting our 2nd Amendment rights!

The current administration has been preoccupied with health care reform and "cap & trade" this year.  Unless the momentum changes, health care will be under their belt not long after the New Year.  After "cap & trade", what's next?  It is clear that reforming the 2nd Amendment visa vi legislation and court decisions is a priority for this Administration.  We must not blink on this issue!

I also agree with Steve on familiarizing folks who have never handled firearms on how to safely and properly handle and shoot them.  I'm convinced that, more often than not, when those folks handle and shoot firearms for the first time, most of them will be hooked for life!  There is just something innate is us as a species on this planet that intimately links us to firearms and other weapons.  It does not make us "knuckle draggers"; it's simply part of our history (i.e., "hunters and gatherers").  Our modern capitalistic economy is nothing more than an extension of the phenomena.  That's why it's so successful despite some of its shortcomings.
