I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Problem is someone elses religious freedom is not suppose to hamper mine. That's whats wrong with our judges. We are a Republic not a true democracy. People need to start standing up for themselves and exercise their rights.

New Link

A New Mexico town has a Ten Commandments "Monument" on the town green that was funded privately several years ago. Now it must be removed because it infringes on Freedom of Religion

I'm not going to deny the rights of others to worship and celebrate their religion as they wish, and America (unlike other nations) does not have a State Religion, those who wish to place a "Monument" that meets the standards established by this town for similar displays should have the right to do so. This should not mean that the existing one must be removed.

"City attorneys say private individuals erected and paid for the monument under a 2007 city resolution. That resolution allows people to erect historical monuments of their choosing."

The suit was filed in 2012 on behalf of two Bloomfield residents who practice the Wiccan religion.

We have much bigger issues in America to deal with. The Wiccans' can clearly erect their own monument under this resolution. In America they are free to do so, unlike much of the rest of the world.

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Minority rule.  Anyone who complains is catered to.

The bigger problem is that the majority doesn't do anything collectively.

To clarify I include myself.  We see so much crap in the news and I don't do anything to try and stop it from happening.

Yeah, the majority, if not all, of the framers of the constitution thought that religion and government should be kept separate. That is best in my book. I am not a christian and I don't appreciate having those values crammed down our throats by anyone, especially by any government thank you. I am also an American Indian and don't appreciate racist names for school mascots. I am a former school superintendent of many american Indian school districts and always avoided the temptation to have any school mascots with names such as "White Devils" or such other racist crap.

I love this forum because I love Dans. I have many times held my tongue when folks are expressing opinions on stuff that has nothing to do with the grand old Dan Wesson firearms that we all share an interest in. How about we just keep the discussions to the firearms and keep religion, politics and such out of it. I am sure there are other forums where those expressions would be more than welcome. Thanks

Butch, I understand and respect your opinions on this subject. The topic was on a "news subject", where people with specific beliefs were allowed to place a monument that was approved by the community. Those with differing beliefs can clearly place their own monument, they should not have the power to remove an existing, and legal, monument.

A DWF Forum entitled "News and Legislation" invites discussion of a wide variety of news, social, and legislative subjects. The role of Admins/Moderators/Range Officers is to keep those discussions within DWF Guidelines, which I believe is done very effectively.

Any Member who believes that any Topic or Post that is objectionable and has not been acted upon by the DWF Staff would best conduct a Private discussion with DWF Founder and Site Owner Jody Baldwin. He is easily accessible to any Member via Personal Message to "Jody".

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

I can certainly understand the point made by Butch. I think it's best for the DWF to make every attempt to keep politics and religion out of the discussion except when it is related to firearms in general or DW’s in particular. We all want the DWF to grow and we can all contribute to that best by keeping our eye on the ball and our posts on topic. That will attract the widest variety of people who share our appreciation of firearms. I came here to share my interest in fine firearms and I registered and became a supporter of this forum because I felt an open, knowledgeable, eager to help, non-critical group was making me feel welcome and accepted my ignorance and showed a willingness to remedy that ignorance by teaching me some of what they know. Most important was that my first posts got answered and quickly and many times to the point that I was asking about. I know the sub forums are available for broader topics, but if it doesn’t have a tie-in to firearms, I would say let’s just not go there. There is too much positive out there: historical , technical, aesthetic, sporting, hunting, competition of all sorts and it is all firearms and DW specific and it is the one thing we can all have in common and share no matter our religion or politics or sexuality or ethnic background or physical limitations, etc, etc. Guns is what we all share and love and agree on. And when we don’t agree on specifics our disagreements can be superficial and good-natured. All I really need to know about you is that you appreciate and respect firearms and that you’re willing to teach and learn about Dan’s in particular. If it were my place to say, I would say when you want to post to ask yourself “is this firearms related” and if the answer is “no”,  just leave it at home.

Good Morning Guys,

I would like to take this opportunity to address the concerns raised by Butch and ParaNormal in the previous posts. I'll be honest I was surprised this has escalated to this point.  Obviously we all have our own political and religious beliefs and to my knowledge no where in the almost 91,000 post has anyone attempted to force their beliefs on another member here.  And to that point I'm not interested in limiting the conversations that can occur in the proper forums as that's what they were created for.

For me I find it interesting to read other members opinions because it may provide a perspective that I hadn't considered. We as a society need to be able to sit together and discuss our views without being offended.

Jody:

I'm glad you are the founder of this forum.  You always have an intelligent viewpoint and have set up the site to be as open a forum as possible.  I, too, have had people post opinions that were viewpoints I hadn't considered until I read them here. It has helped make me be a better, more well in formed person.

I salute you.

It is hard for me to gauge the reaction to my post within the limitations here,  Jody has posted and I was surprised he used the word “escalate”, I want to emphatically state that it was not my intention to “escalate” anything negative. I’m in full agreement with Jody’s statements. My post was long-winded and maybe over enthusiastic but I intended absolutely in no way to be belligerent or offensive or disrespectful to anyone.  I have the highest respect for the OP and I was not personally offended by the topic, My SOLE intent was to sympathize with the sentiments expressed in Butch’s post. Which I took to be simply that the subject of this sub-forum was “about gun laws and other news gun owners may find interesting” and to agree that the topic missed the mark. Please believe me, no judgement beyond that was intended. I guess I got off into some philosophical BS about the purpose of this forum etc. My enthusiasm  for this forum does that to me. But please read my post again and understand I meant absolutely no malice in my tone or intentions. For anyone who may have been offended please PM me you phone number and I will personally apologize because in all sincereity, my intent was the complete opposite. I re-read the post and see several sentences I should have left out; that could easily be misinterpreted, in fact I wish I had simply said: “I believe the subject is off-topic”. That would have summed it up the heart of the matter.

Respectfully, Duane

It's good to have discussions about everything.  Collectively, we just got out in front of what looked like a topic that could go south. As long as the posts continue to remain civil, then no harm.

Hey Duane,

Escalated was probably a poor word choice in this case. We have a staff forum and as Ron stated above we as a group discussed this before I made my statement above.

I certainly didn't take any offense to anything that has been said and appreciate all of our members and there opinions.

You know what?

As I read the comments here I realize that MY post was off topic, it was not shooting or gun specific. It belonged in "General Discussion" or "Current Events", so ...

I'm locking the original Topic, so the controversy can slow down, and apologizing to anyone who was concerned with any of my posts on this subject.

Any Member that wishes to re-open this Topic in the correct Forum is urged to do so.
