Even as I write this, it is inevitable that Connecticut will fall under some of the most restrictive "Gun Control" measures in America.
-Over 100 additional named firearms (CT was still under the Federal AWB in most respects), plus description that includes anything remotely resembling an AR-15. "Assault Weapons" owned as of tonite will grandfathered and must be registered (for a fee)
-Magazine limit of ten rounds for all firearms. Larger magazines will be grandfathered and ownership of them will be registered (for a fee)
-It looks like pistols will be considered to be Assault Weapons as well, based on their ability to accept a magazine in excess of 10 of rounds fully contained within the grip. No magazine that contains cartridges outside/below the grip will be allowed.
These measures all go into effect when signed by the Governor, either tonite or tomorrow morning.
-Certificate of eligibility required to purchase long guns, safety training course required (for a fee)
-NICS required for everything (for a fee)
I'm possibly not understanding or relating all of this entirely accurately, there is much more, but all of the preceding is pretty solid
Obama already had a Victory Lap scheduled for next Monday in CT, and our Governor is probably going to set a new World Record for "continuous application of lips to buttocks" at that time.
The "Constitution State"? I think not!
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

As we discussed earlier today, I feel your pain and outrage. I hate to sound like a wild eyed right wing nutcase, but if they can do this to the 2nd Amendment with such impunity, what's next? Also note they have managed to attach a fee to every action. IL, NY, CO, CT who's next?

The interesting thing is that the "grabbers" suddenly gave up on grandfathering so they could jam thru an E-cert (Emergency Certification) Bill.
And Obama is scheduled to be in CT on Monday April 8 as part of his Gun Control Road Show.
Coincidence? You decide!

My condolences to you folks in Connecticut, Colorado, and New York, especially CT. I really feel bad and only encourage you to move to states that are conducive to protecting our 2nd Amendment rights.
I can only say that I might have some shred of respect for those same fecal minded gun grabbing politicians if they would also follow up in encouraging or evicting firearms manufacturers from their respective states. Connecticut is home to Sturm Ruger, Marlin, and Colt Industries. Colorado is home to Magpul. New York is home to CZ Dan Wesson (of course). After all, if these bureaucratic blowhard nutjobs think that firearms are harmful to society, then they shouldn't hypocritically enjoy the economic benefit of gun company employed constituents and gun company paid tax revenue while concurrently banning or restricting gun company products that produces employment or tax revenue. This two faced behavior has to stop and would love to see them economically punished in the form of these companies leaving for greener pastures and friendlier territory (can you say Florida)? DW41F.

Constitution state indeed, what a crock. As a local radio host said a while back, this isn't gun control at all, it's simply people control.
Regarding the part requiring you to register any offending firearms already in your possession...I don't know if I could do that. To me, all that means is now they will have an official tally of who has these offending weapons, so it will be easier for them to confiscate them when that law eventually is passed. Steve, I bet you're glad that you lifted your self-imposed gun limit a while back.
Now more than ever, I'm glad I live where I do. Although I have the uneasy feeling in my gut, too. Recently, our state Representatives passed a bill that would allow Utah citizens to CC without a permit...the Governor vetoed it. Some people have said that the Reps merely proposed the bill for political posturing (knowing the Gov would veto), to use a "See, I'm in support of gun owners" position during the next election. I wouldn't be surprised if it were true. There were enough votes to override the veto, but I bet they'll let the veto end it.
The severity of the knee-jerk reactions both pro and anti that I'm witnessing lately is surely unnerving and depressing. I agree that manufacturers should pull up stakes & move to more friendly states. Hit these politicians in the pocketbook, with a sudden vacuum in their tax revenue!

This would be the best way to put a stop to all this foolishness but I do not expect to see it happen. I fear this once great nation (as far a freedom goes) is circling the drain.

Harly,
I just joined here so I can spread the word about the Bill and answer your question. It was a really rough night for us here yesterday. My wife and I stayed up till 11:30pm to watch the proceedings on TV. You'd be surprised (maybe not!) at the level of ignorance and BS that came from the State Legislature last night. My blood was boiling. I am fortunate to have both a state senator and representative who voted against it, but it wasn't enough.
I'm a member of the CT Citizen's Defense League, a grassroots lobbying group who was one of the groups who took the lead in fighting this and will now take it to court. Their website will have all the info about this bill, including a very good summary written and forwarded by a state Rep.
Try here: http://www.ccdl.us/
On the home page look to the left side and click on "Read our blog" It has everything you need about SB (Senate Bill 1160). If you scroll through some of the blog moderator's posts, you'll find links to the bill itself as well as a summary of it. Good luck trying to read it. It has about 138 pages and I'm quite certain that there is no one in this state who has read the who thing (myself included). It wasn't even given to the rank and file members of the legislature until a few hours before the debate began yesterday, so they didn't even really know what they were voting on. What a crock. As Warren Zevon said in song "Send lawyers, guns, and money."
If anyone really wants to help us out, the CCDL is asking for donations to fund a legal battle. I'm sure there's a link on their website for it. We're in a whole heap of trouble here.

There is a disturbing trend in government of late, passing major bills without even reading it or knowing what's in it, ie Obamacare and the CT gun law. Heaven only knows what was slipped into that bill that is now law. Time will tell.
Its funny, bills like this can sail right thru and get signed into law in a matter of hours, but the federal govt. can't pass a budget in going on five years.
Anything worth doing is worth doing well.

I have three guns at risk:
1) S&W Model 59 9mm (15 round capacity)
2) The AR that Andrew built for me
3) Browning Buckmark because it has a Tactical Solutions barrel, threaded. I Have the original barrel, but I really love my Buckmark just the way it is
If I do have to register this as an Assault Weapon, I might as well go ahead and get a supressor for it

Now THAT, Steve, is a fine example of making lemonade when life gives you nothing but lemons. I like the way you think.
I will be out your way on Tuesday night at the Middletown Elks lodge for the monthly CT Citizen's Defense League Meeting.

BTW, spread the word. There's a Rally for Gun Rights at the Capital Building in Hartford on Sat. April 20th from 12-3. There was a similar rally there in Jan (along with many others across the country) and about 1200-1500 people showed up. Open carry was permitted on the grounds as long as no gun holder went inside. It worked out well and was a great time. I'm looking forward to this next one and hope many more people show up. This fight isn't over, so even if the rally seems like it's after the fact, it is still important.

Gee, I wonder what this is reminiscent of? Maybe Obamacare (among many others), when Nancy proclaimed that "we must pass the bill to understand the bill", or some such hogwash? What a heaping load of feces. How we in the public let them continually get away with this crap is asinine IMO. Those "people" should be in jail, without question, serving life!

Yeah, ain't that the truth. Wait, I think they said that congress finally passed a budget last month (haven't heard word one since then), but Barry still hasn't passed his own not even one, not one time since his reign began...
Steve, was the AR given to you through proper channels, or was it gifted to you from a son to a father? And of course, if you prefer to not divulge that on this presumably entirely government-watched interweb, I won't fault you one iota.
Yes, like your Florida rooted sibling, my "big bro" paranoia seems to compound almost weekly these days. Good grief! That's it, I'm hitting the for some mental peace.

Actually, this question has been nagging at me a little because I cannot "prove" when I got this rifle. It was built on a lower bought at a Gun Show in Texas at least 4 years ago and I doubt a NICS was run on it then (Gunshow Loophole?).
My hope is that:
1) A statement from my son, who is a Federal Law Enforcement Officer with a fairly substantial Security Clearance classification
2) A serial number on a DPMS lower that is well over 4 years old.
3) Multiple posts on at least three shooting Forums picturing and describing this gun and it's history, including THIS post!
will resolve any questions that come from a bureaucracy that will be absolutely overwhelmed.

I am truly saddened by this news. To Steve and all up there I am sorry and angry at your loss of more of your civil rights. I used to be proud to say that I came from Connecticut... not anymore. It looks like your stuck between a rock and a hard place. If you don't comply with the registration you will be a felon and loose all your guns and the right to ever own one again. If you do they know where to come get your guns. While it is easy to say you should move somewhere else, reality doesn't always allow that. I hope none of you up there are like me, I have mags stuck away in places i don't even remember, hell I carried a loaded mag for years in my laptop case and traveled all over the US and even out of the country several times. One day I came across it looking for a occasionally used computer cable.
It seems Colt, Stag Arms and Mossberg may leave the state, but only time will tell.
And just a little more uneasiness in the gut. Last week I was working in a shop owned by a customer and friend I have known for over 15 years, a very straight talking guy. He told me that his son, who lives in Jacksonville, has a friend who sells ammo through the internet. The DHS paid him a visit and told him they would give so much for his ammo. He told them it was not for sale to them, and especially not at the price offered. They told him it was not an offer, and that he has 5 days to comply or all that he has will be taken by eminent domain. I cannot confirm if this is true or not, but like I said, I have never known this person to BS. If true this is very disturbing.

YIKES! That is not good news! I assume you haven't spoken to him since then to see how it worked out?
