I just came back from a small vacation and hike up in the Porcupine Mountains here in Michigan.
Three things stand out as more memorable than the others and two of them are about the Nanny State.
1) The first on the list was just how prehistoric the forest and geology seemed around the Presque Isle River and Falls area where it empties into Lake Superior.
Now the other two thanks to the people who are supposedly the servants of the people who pay there checks...
2) Large billboards along the the highway that say, "Obey the signs or Pay the fines". Now there is just something about that galls me. They could have said, 'Ignore the signs or Pay the fines'.
There is just something about the word "Obey" and the government mindset we now have to endure.
3) The other example was kind of humorous and came from our government employees in charge of our natural resources. A sign that said, "Wipe your feet before walking in the forests", now that is truly Nannyesque.
Endeavor to persevere,
Press on regardless.

I spent some time backpacking the "Porkies" in the mid sixties with a Church Summer Camp program, it was beautiful then, and I hope it is now.
As a Michigan native in the 50's through the mid 70's, a piece of my heart is always there. Even after all these years, when my wife and I talk about "home", a pretty big part of that is Michigan.
Detroit is such a tragedy, it's frightening, every time we visit more pieces of our Michigan heritage seem to be self destructing.
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Amen Brother. Before moving to Texas in 89, I had lived on the west side of the state (Grand Rapids) for a number of years. It always amazed me when I would go back to the Detroit/Pontiac/Flint corridor. It was truly 2 different worlds, even back then.
It's funny, I think of MI as where I came from and TX as home . Well except for......

This won't really mean a lot to non-Michigaders, but this is a very divided state. Once you get north of Flint and west of Ann Arbor, it is very different in terms of lifestyle and personal ethics.
There's a reason that there is a long standing sentiment in the Upper Peninsula for separate statehood. The Yoopers Get It!

This is turning into the personal Topic of about three of us, everyone else out there is scratching their heads and asking, "What the F is a yooper?"
It would be easier to explain what a Sasquatch is, so I won't try, except to say that somewhere out there in every part of America there are yoopers, hillbillies, red necks, okies, 'shiners, cowboys ...
All part of the real America that just lives it's own life, and does not need or want a lot of interference from Big Brother.
