I was thinking of making this a follow-up of a previous post I made on a .38 Super Conversion, but since it involves an entirely different gun, I made it it’s own thread.

The new gun is a Kimber Custom II full size 9mm with a stainless steel frame and a carbon steel slide. I felt the all steel configuration would stand up better to full power .38 Super+P loads. As with the Kimber LW, the Sig .38 Super barrel fit the gun as if it were made for it. This gun will be a dedicated .38 Super since I still have the LW in 9mm. I do have two issues with the Custom II. First, the rear sight set screw is rounded out (not by me this time) and second, the trigger bow is slightly bent causing the magazine to stick when being released. Both issues are easily lived with for now as this is a range gun and the sights are dead on at 10 yards. I may eventually send it back to Kimber to address these two issues.

My first trip to the range with it was less than impressive, since it was cold and windy and all I had was a long sleeve shirt to keep warm. We were only there long enough for my son to shoot a few practice rounds with his carry gun and for me to function test the Custom II with the .38 Super barrel.

This week was much better since it was in the lower 70’s and very little wind. I tested three loads, 18 rounds each. These three loads were the most varied that I had. Two loads were with two new (to me) powders that I have never used before; Winchester WSF and Hodgon Longshot.

The 3 loads tested were:
6.2gr of Longshot with a 124gr Xtreme rn hpcb(heavy plated concave base)--makes brass very dirty--1st picture
7.2gr Winchester WSF with 125gr Sig V-Crown jacked hollow point--feed problems on 1st round--2nd picture
6.2gr W231 with a 95gr rnfp (pulled from some .380 Winchester white box)--very accurate--3rd picture
