I have the .357 Ruger Blackhawk S/A, 6.5 inch barrel. Ruger makes about 14 different grips for their Ruger S/A. Mine is the XR3-Red. The original grips feels a little small for my average size hand. The pachmayr grip feels really good. I still wanted a bigger grip. More of a competition style grip. It has a nice rest for your thumb. I like that. If I knew what I was doing, I would be dangerous.
I bought a blank grip off of ebay and hoped it would work on my Ruger. I had to whittle it down to the size and shape with the poor man's dremel tool. That's a lot easier said then done. I'm not a master wood worker like L.B. Anyway this is what I came up with.

This gives you an idea of the size difference in these grips.

Nice work Gary, I bet it fits like a glove! Making grips is no easy feat...which makes guys like LB truly gifted, in my book. hehe
I've only made one grip attempt so far, myself. But I didn't start with a blank, I whittled down some fat checkered Herrett's to fit my .454 Seville. Like you, I found that a Dremel tool will get nice results.
I took a lot of meat off these, but left some of the checkering as sort of a palm swell area. I also left most of the ridge on the left side, as a mild thumb rest. Then I buggered them up, by cutting a little "accent groove" along the bottom of each side...chipping some of the wood in the process. Oh well.

Those are really beautiful grips. I like the design and I love that color. What color is that? That's a good idea on using an existing grip to modify it. I have a beat up DW grip that I'm going to work on and modify. The dremel does a good job if you don't have to much work to do. I have a checkering tool too. It doesn't seem to work on soft wood. I have used it to re checker old grips that already have checkering, but they are worn down somewhat. Maybe one day L.B. will make a video on how he makes his grips. The thing about L.B. is: He is a master carpenter among other things.

Thanks. Honestly, I have no idea what the color is. I cave the can to my brother, for some project he was doing. I should have probably written down what it was before I gave it to him.
I like the video idea, of LB doing his thing. He did put together a start to finish pic thread a while back... LINK
